  • Did you know that even more than 15 years after stopping excavating a TBM can still be reused for a new mission? Rebuild Services by #Herrenknecht is about refurbishing and remanufacturing TBMs to make them fit by repairing and modifying their features to fit the next jobsite and geology. Find out how the biggest TBM built in its time (2005-2006) for a project in Madrid, Spain, was refurbished years after for embracing a new mission in Poland. Its new mission: two tunnels, each 2,258 meters long, for the new S19 expressway between Rzeszów and Babica. The machine, owned by contractor ACCIONA Construcción has been made fit for reuse at the company's technology park in Noblejas (Toledo) since spring 2021 to adapt it to the requirements of the Polish project, conducted together with Mostostal Warszawa S.A. A number of improvements were made, such as replacing the previous system for injecting the annular gap grout with a modern two-component system, installing a quick-unloading system for the segments and assembling the segment ring in semi-automatic mode. Our Group Brand colleagues from Herrenknecht Formwork (segment production) and TECHNI-METAL SYSTEMES (Multi-Service Vehicles) were also involved. We wish the teams every success!!! Proudly looking back in May: the second HS2 Northolt Tunnel TBM Caroline manufactured by Herrenknecht EPB Shield was extracted at Green Park Way vent shaft (Northolt Tunnel). The 9.82 m machine in diameter was moved across the site to a position where it can be dismantled using a gantry crane. To move 850 tonnes components from the top of the shaft to the disassembly position would not be possible with conventional road transport, so a large crane was used to place it in position. The Self-Propelled Modular Transporters supplied by our partner Mammoet were the ideal transport mode and most efficient way of achieving this task. They do not only travel but the load bed can be lifted and lowered as required. First, the TBM was lowered onto a set of transport rails which had been placed on the SPMTs while the TBM was being lifted. Second, once the disassembly position was reached, the load was positioned above steel supports which were preplaced. Third, once all the checks were made to ensure that everything was lined up correctly, the SPMT bed started to lower the load onto the steel supports while the team continually monitored the operation. Finally, once the load was securely on the supports, the SPMTs were removed from under the load to a parking place nearby. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eEmti-dm All four tunnel boring machines being used to bore the 5.47 km Northolt tunnel have completed their journeys. In total, the machines have excavated 4,160,000 tonnes of clay and lined the tunnel with 14,300 concrete tunnel rings, made up of 94,233 concrete segments. Thanks again to all the crews for the great teamwork! #pioneeringundergroundtogether Credit: HS2 Ltd

Congratulations to RVNL- Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (Project owner) and L&T – Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Civil Contractor) on their successful final breakthrough (Package 4)! Two Herrenknecht Single Shield TBMs Shiv & Shakti- S-1310A & S-1309A, each with a diameter of 9.11 m, excavated twin parallel tunnels totaling over 20 km as a part of the new Rishikesh–Karnaprayag railway line in India. Spanning 125 km with 12 stations, bridges, and numerous tunnels, the line will cut passengers's travel time from seven hours to just over two. Tunnelling through complex, geologically active terrain posed major challenges. In such conditions, rock can settle on the shield skin of the machine and block its progress. To prevent this, the crew relied on torque box cylinders integrated into the cutterhead design. These allow infinitely variable horizontal and vertical adjustment of the main drive—enabling the excavation diameter to be radially increased by up to 100 mm when necessary. Congratulations to the McConnell Dowell teams for their nineth MTBM ‘marine recovery’ at the Watercare Southwest Outfall Project in Clarks Beach, Auckland, New Zealand. It closed their 14th outfall project, a 240m long pipeline, using our Herrenknecht Direct Pipe® technology with an AVN1000 supported by a HK750PT Pipe Thruster. Direct Pipe® is a one-step method for underground crossings or trenchless landfall installations in pipeline construction. A Pipe Thruster is used to push a prefabricated steel pipeline from a launch pit through the ground to the target point while the soil is being excavated at the face by a slurry tunnel boring machine. Once the MTBM has reached its final destination, it is 'recovered' from the seabed - the only maritime work step. The machine is safely uncoupled using a specially developed recovery module and finally lifted to the surface. Besides the pipeline industry, a growing field of application for Direct Pipe shore approaches are export cable landfalls to connect offshore wind farms to the transmission grid. This makes trenchless technologies an indispensable part of the energy transition and the use of renewable energy sources. This new harbour outfall at Clarks Beach is part of the Southwest Wastewater Servicing Scheme. It is a crucial part of a wider programm of work that will support the projected population growth of Auckland’s south-west which is expected to grow to around 30,000 people by 2050. The stormwater project at Prague VH Airport in Ruzyně, securing the airport area from floods, was successfully completed. Subterra a.s. , a new Herrenknecht customer, used an AVN Herrenknecht system for the first time at a rather unusual jobsite—directly inside the airport area. The AVN1200TC machine was partly used in mixed soil conditions and encountered much stronger uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) than expected. Initially, the equipment was selected and delivered with a mixed cutting head capable of handling UCS of 25-50 MPa. However, just before starting, a much stronger UCS of up to 120 MPa was observed! We made it happen: a rock cutting head for the MTBM with an extension for pipe OD1720mm, available at our rental department, was immediately delivered and changed on short notice. Thanks to the excellent cooperation between our Herrenknecht Service UT experts and the Subterra team at the job site, the project was completed on time. In total, 316 meters were excavated safely. Božena has proved herself right! Congratulations to the crews! And thanks to Subterra a.s. for their trust. We look forward to future projects together!

Congratulations to the teams working at the Northolt Tunnel at the HS2 project: it is now complete! All four tunnel boring machines being used to bore the 13.52 km Northolt tunnel have completed their journeys. In total, the machines have excavated 4,160,000 tonnes of clay and lined the tunnel with 14,300 concrete tunnel rings, made up of 94,233 concrete segments. Due to high water pressure in the ground at the site at Green Park Way, the machines are finishing their drives in a reception can in the shaft. The reception can method allows the TBM to maintain pressure while sealant can be applied from the tunnel lining, preventing water ingress. It is then depressurised before it is opened and the giant is lifted out. Each machine was remove with the support of our partner Mammoet . Thanks again for the great teamwork! #pioneeringundergroundtogether Credit: HS2 Ltd
