Council calls on the Government to introduce Hillsborough Law

A cross-party motion backed by all political parties in Liverpool will see the council write to the Government urging it to introduce the Hillsborough Law.

The wording of the motion is:

“Council notes the unanimously agreed motion of July 2024 calling for the Hillsborough Law to be introduced.

“Council is deeply disappointed the Hillsborough Law still has not been brought forward by the Government missing the commitment to bring the bill forward prior to the 36th anniversary of the disaster.

“Council puts on record our thanks to Ian Byrne who reintroduced the Hillsborough Law to Parliament, as well the cross party group of MPs who co-sponsored this, including Kim Johnson, Paula Barker, Siân Berry, Tom Morrison and Sorcha Eastwood.

“Council reaffirms its full support for the Hillsborough Law as drafted in 2017, not any replacement or diluted version, and believes that only the Hillsborough Law in full must come forward including:

  • a legal duty of candour on public authorities and officials to tell the truth and proactively cooperate with official investigations and inquiries.
  • Victims of disasters or state-related deaths are entitled to parity of legal representation during inquests and inquiries through publicly funded legal representation and an end to near-limitless legal spending by public bodies.

“Council resolves to instruct the Chief Executive to write to the Prime Minister in a co-signed letter with the Leader and Leaders of Political Groups to re-state the council’s resolute position in this vital legislation.”

The motion was approved at a meeting of the council on Wednesday 30 July.
