About us

The British Business Bank is the UK's economic development bank. Our mission is to drive sustainable growth and prosperity across the UK, and to enable the transition to a net zero economy, by supporting access to finance for smaller businesses. We design, deliver and manage finance programmes for the UK government to increase the supply of finance to smaller businesses. We do not lend directly but work with over 200 delivery partners to address existing gaps in the market. Our programmes were supporting more than 90,000 companies with more than £12.4bn of finance at the end of March 2023. British Business Bank plc is a public limited company registered in England and Wales, registration number 08616013, registered office Steel City House, West Street, Sheffield, S1 2GQ. It is a development bank wholly owned by HM Government. British Business Bank plc and its subsidiaries are not banking institutions and do not operate as such.   • Just announced: The Government has allocated more than £4.5bn to the Bank as part of the ‘Backing your Business’ small business plan. Four existing Bank initiatives are being extended or expanded to provide further support for smaller businesses, including the Growth Guarantee Scheme, our Start Up Loans programme, ENABLE Guarantees programme, and Regional Angels Programme. This funding provides greater certainty and more capacity to help support established and new businesses in accessing the finance they need to grow and thrive.   • 🚀 Accelerating the ambitions of UK smaller businesses Our Growth Guarantee Scheme has reached £2.5bn in total lending, enabling smaller businesses across the UK to invest, expand and thrive. 📍 69% of this lending has reached businesses outside London and the South East 📍 £270m+ has supported businesses in the North West alone 📍 Over £633m has been provided to companies under five years old Chancellor of the Exchequer Rt Hon Rachel Reeves said: "The Growth Guarantee Scheme has made a huge impact on our regional economies, helping smaller businesses across the UK to invest and grow, creating jobs and putting more money in people’s pockets." Launched in July 2024, Growth Guarantee Scheme can be accessed via accredited lenders and provides crucial financing through term loans, overdrafts, asset and invoice finance, supporting up to £2m per facility. 👉 Click through for the key highlights of this milestone. 

  • 🚀 Unlocking potential across the UK    Out today, our Impact Report shows our 2024/25 activity is expected to create 38,000 additional jobs and £18.0bn of additional business turnover, equivalent to £8.0bn expected increase in UK economic output.    84% of the businesses we supported were outside of London, and our activity in 2024/25 is expected to provide a more than £100m boost to economic output in each and every UK Nation and region.  

  • We were delighted to welcome Gareth Thomas MP, Minister for Services, Small Business and Exports, South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard and Sheffield Central MP Abtisam Mohamed to our Sheffield office today.
