Updates

  • We’re pleased to confirm that construction work is now underway at Winkworth Arboretum, where Buxton is working on behalf of the National Trust. Following a period of project pause, mobilisation and site setup are now underway in preparation for the restart of this important scheme. The works will deliver new visitor facilities including a reception, shop and café, along with new office space, car and coach parking, and landscape restoration. The project makes use of Modern Methods of Construction, with Cross Laminated Timber forming the main structural frame, along with renewable energy features to help reduce operational carbon. We look forward to working with the National Trust, IPT Architects, Woodley Coles LLP , MEP Concepts Ltd, and RGP as the project progresses.

  • Supporting Future Builders: Buxton Donates Bricks to North East Surrey College of Technology (NESCOT), Surrey This week, Buxton was proud to support Nescot College, a local further education provider known for its hands-on construction courses; by donating four pallets of bricks to aid their practical training sessions. Nescot, which offers a range of construction-related programmes including bricklaying, plays a vital role in preparing the next generation of skilled tradespeople. By donating surplus materials from our sites, we’re helping ensure students have access to the resources they need to develop their craft in a real-world setting. This donation is part of Buxton’s wider social value commitment to support education, reduce waste, and invest in the communities where we work. We’re always looking for opportunities to make a positive impact whether that’s through employment, training, or resource-sharing. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Nescot and other local institutions as we work together to build a more sustainable and skilled future. "A big thanks to Jamie and the team at Buxton for delivering bricks to Nescot College this morning. It makes a real difference for our students, especially those on construction courses to have access to the right materials for hands on learning. We really appreciate the support" Jen Harvey, Nescot College

  • As part of Buxton’s ongoing commitment to creating meaningful social value in the communities where we work, Jamie Clancy-Toomey, our Social Value Manager, recently took part in an inspiring school engagement event at Woodcote High School. Organised by Croydon Commitment, the event brought together a group of dedicated employer volunteers to deliver an Interview Skills Workshop aimed at preparing students for the world of work. The session provided students with practical advice, mock interview experience, and real-world insights into employer expectations. Jamie joined other professionals in guiding students through the interview process, offering constructive feedback and encouragement. The workshop was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from both students and staff. One student shared: “The workshop was motivational and gave me a realistic view of what I’ll be doing in the future.” This kind of feedback reinforces the importance of employer engagement in education and the positive impact it can have on young people’s confidence and career readiness. At Buxton, we believe in building stronger communities through collaboration, education, and opportunity. Supporting initiatives like this is just one of the many ways we aim to leave a lasting legacy in the areas where we operate.

  • A Standout Achievement in a Demanding Year of Study and Site Work We’re always proud to see our team members growing their careers while taking on new challenges and we’re especially pleased to recognise a fantastic achievement by one of our own, George Riddles After three years of hard work and determination, George has graduated from the University of Greenwich with a First Class Honours in Construction Management. That would be an impressive result on its own but it’s made even more so by the fact that he’s been managing the 12 Claremont project in Hastings as Site Manager since April last year, all while completing his studies. Balancing the demands of a live construction site with the pressures of a university degree is no easy feat. The past year in particular has been full-on, with tight deadlines, long days, and more than a few plates spinning at once. But George has handled it with real commitment, and with the support of the Buxton team, he’s seen both the project and his studies through to success. Now, with his degree complete, George is focusing on the final step in his apprenticeship: the End Point Assessment, which will lead to chartered membership of the Chartered Institute of Building, a well-deserved next step in his professional journey. We’re proud to celebrate this achievement and look forward to seeing what’s next.

  • Roof Removal Marks Key Milestone for Newhaven Health Hub The removal of the existing central pitched roof at the former Co-op building marks a major milestone in the development of the Newhaven Health Hub. It has been replaced with a new flat roof and three courtyard areas, supported by a new steel frame. The existing slab was reinforced with carbon fibre strips to support the additional load, and new drainage has been installed beneath to serve the future consultation rooms.   The two outer pitched roofs have had their old rafters removed and replaced with stronger ones. The existing steel frame has been repainted, and new sarking boards and breather membranes have been installed in preparation for a Rheinzink roof. The existing pitched roof over the new gym has been removed and replaced with a steel frame and flat roof, ready to support photovoltaic panels. With the scaffold roof now removed from the former Co-op building, the remainder of the construction can progress.   This stage brings the project closer to realising a modern, multi-use community facility that will house two GP surgeries—Quayside Medical Practice and Chapel Street Surgery—a new pharmacy, co-working space for creative industries, and enhanced facilities for Wave Active’s Seahaven Swim & Fitness Centre.   The former Co-op at 10 Newhaven Square is being fully refurbished for Quayside Medical Practice, featuring additional clinical rooms, new waiting areas, improved staff facilities, and a Changing Places facility accessible from the square. The former Peacocks unit (5–8 Newhaven Square) is being converted for Chapel Street Surgery, offering similar upgrades across both floors. A new pharmacy will open in the adjacent vacant unit at 9 Newhaven Square. In addition, over 200 square metres of co-working space for creative organisations will be created, accessible from Chapel Street. Upgrades to Seahaven Swim & Fitness Centre include a new shared entrance, an expanded gym, two new studios, and improved first-floor facilities.   The Newhaven Health Hub is set to become a vibrant centre for health, wellbeing, and creative enterprise in the heart of the town.

  • Last week, we had the absolute pleasure of representing Buxton at Norbury Manor Primary School’s Careers Day, a fantastic event designed to inspire young minds and open doors to the world of work. Buxton’s Social Value Manager was thrilled to take part and help show pupils just how exciting and varied career paths can be. The theme for the day was all about mystery and discovery. We were each asked to bring an item related to our job and challenge the children to guess what we do. Naturally, we brought along a very special guest – Buxton Bear! Not only did he steal the show, but he also became an instant hit with the children, helping to break the ice and spark curiosity about the construction industry and the many roles within it. Throughout the workshops, the children were incredibly engaged. From the moment they started guessing job titles to asking thoughtful questions about what it’s like to work in construction, their enthusiasm was infectious. It was heartening to see such bright interest in how buildings are made, the people behind them, and the skills that bring everything together. After the event, we received this heartwarming message from the school: "Thank you so much for attending our Careers Day and making it such a memorable experience for our pupils. The feedback from both staff and children has been overwhelmingly positive, and it's clear that your workshops made a real impact. Our pupils were genuinely engaged and excited throughout the sessions, and I've heard so many enthusiastic conversations in the corridors since your visit." They added: "You have truly helped to widen our pupils' career knowledge and opened their eyes to possibilities they may never have considered before. This kind of real-world insight is invaluable in helping our young people begin to think about their futures and understand the diverse pathways available to them. The questions they asked and the connections they made during your workshops demonstrate just how much they gained from the experience." At Buxton, we believe that social value starts with opportunities – and that includes empowering the next generation. Being part of this day was a small but meaningful way to spark ambition, challenge stereotypes, and show young people that they can aim high, no matter their background. A huge thank you to Norbury Manor Primary and Croydon Commitment for the warm welcome and for organising such a well-run and impactful event. And of course, a big round of applause for Buxton Bear, who clearly has a second career in public speaking! We look forward to taking part in more events like this and continuing our commitment to building brighter futures in every community we work in.

What a whirlwind couple of weeks — full of challenges, impact, and inspiration. Last Monday, I wrote off my car in a crash.😩 (oops rip the Jazz) By Thursday, my pup Millie was seriously ill and on an IV drip for two days (thankfully she’s now back to her cheeky self 🐾). And in between all of that… we showed up — for young people, for schools, and for the future of our industry. 📍 Last Thursday kicked off the first 2/4 of fantastic engagement sessions at Oaks Park High School 📍 Friday we joined Norbury Manor Primary for a buzzing “What’s My Job?” session — Buxton Bear was a huge hit! 🐻 thank you for Croydon Commitment for the invite! 📍 This Wednesday, I was inspired at the Drive Forward Foundation Care to Career Festival — amazing panellists and a powerful keynote by Chris Wild sharing his lived experience and work supporting young people in care. So great to reconnect with Anita Ribeiro too. 📍 Thursday morning, we were at Coombe Wood School for their Careers Week — brilliant conversations with students exploring their futures. 📍 Thursday afternoon, part 2 at Oaks Park: 20 Year 10s toured their future school building, currently being constructed by Buxton Building Contractors Limited Huge thanks to @John Gothard for hosting — we definitely spotted some future Quantity Surveyors! And to round it all off, today I attended an energising and thought-provoking session organised and delivers by Impact Advantage and Jimmy Cockerton at the BT Tower (most amazing view of London😍). Such a genuine refreshing space for collaboration and purpose-led conversations — excited for what’s next! Lovely to catch up with the lovely Kawsar A ❤️ Here’s some pictures to enjoy of the positives and ahem not so positives 😂

  • Today, Jamie Clancy-Toomey, Buxton's Social Value Manager had the privilege of attending Oaks Park High School, not just as a representative of Buxton, but as a former student. Alongside our Quantity Surveying Apprentice, Adam Gent we delivered a construction careers session to an enthusiastic group of Year 9 and Year 10 students. The session is part of a wider programme we’ve developed at Buxton to inspire young people to explore careers in construction. We introduced the students to the breadth of opportunities in our industry, then challenged them to work in teams on a fun and interactive ‘Build a Bridge’ activity. Their creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving were genuinely impressive. One standout design proudly named the “Oasis Bridge” took the prize for most creative structure of the day! This event had added significance for Jamie personally, as she previously attended the school as a student. It was incredibly rewarding to return and share her own journey from school leaver to construction apprentice and show students that there are real pathways into meaningful careers in the built environment. Buxton is currently on site delivering a new expansion project for the school, and this classroom session is just the beginning. Next week, the same students will join us on a guided site walk to see construction in action adding another layer to their real-world learning experience. At Buxton, we’re proud to deliver meaningful and impactful social value wherever we work. Engaging with local schools and inspiring the next generation is at the heart of that mission. Thank you to Oaks Park High for having us back and to the future engineers, architects and surveyors we met today: keep building!
