Building Tomorrow: Retail In the most recent instalment of our ‘Building Tomorrow’ series we asked Luis Rafael Fuentes Arambula, Partner, Nicola Scaranaro, Partner, and David Kong, Partner at Foster + Partners to look ahead at the future of retail design. They explore designing to align with brands’ values, seamlessly blending social and cultural elements, and engaging the senses through different experiences. ‘The future of retail design is about creating more human-scale, immersive experiences that blend retail with cultural and social elements. To engage local people and visitors, new developments should incorporate welcoming green spaces, provide a range of places to eat and drink, and host curated events that align with retailers’ values. Retail and public space blend seamlessly to enhance the civic experience – drawing people in and giving back to the city. Meanwhile, architecture should reflect both the brand identity and local culture to instil a strong sense of place.’ Nicola Scaranaro, Partner at Foster + Partners. Every month, three different voices from the practice share their ideas about the future of the built environment. Covering a range of typologies – from healthcare to airports and the workplace – we are building a picture of tomorrow. 🔗 Read the full article: https://brnw.ch/21wUwWC Artwork by the Design Communications team at Foster + Partners. 📷: 1: Gabriela Hearst Los Angeles Flagship, Los Angeles © Ben Meier / Gabriela Hearst 2: Bishops Square Retail, London © Aaron Hargreaves / Foster + Partners 3: Old Spitalfields Market, London © Aaron Hargreaves / Foster + Partners #Architecture #Retail #Design #Innovation #Sustainability #Engineering #Construction

Did you know that in 1991 the Willis Building was recognised as the newest building to be given Grade I listed building status in Britain. At the time, it was one of only two listed buildings under 30 years of age. Completed in 1975, the Willis Building in Ipswich redefined the modern office with its open-plan design, flexible layout and employee-focused amenities. Accommodating 1,350 staff across three-storeys, the project fostered a strong sense of community whilst seamlessly integrating into the surrounding urban setting. 🔗 Learn more about one of the practice’s earliest projects, from its secret swimming pool to its innovative use of raised floors which anticipated the digital age and the importance of technology within the office. https://brnw.ch/21wUpYP 📷: 1-2: © Nigel Young / Foster + Partners 3: © Tim Street-Porter #Architecture #Design #Innovation #Sustainability #Engineering #Construction

Artificial Intelligence and Architecture, from Research to Practice. Foster + Partners’ Sherif Tarabishy, Associate Partner and Design Systems Analyst, and Martha Tsigkari, Senior Partner and Head of Applied R+D, contribute an essay to the latest edition of Artificial Intelligence and Architecture, from Research to Practice. This volume explores the current tipping point in the interaction between one of humanity's oldest disciplines and one of our newest technologies - architecture and artificial intelligence - through the lens of history, practice, and theory. In their essay, entitled 'Reimaging Architectural Practice, The AI-Native Future of Design and Operations,' Martha and Sherif outline how Foster + Partners is reimagining architectural practice by embedding AI at the core of its workflows, transforming design, operations and knowledge-sharing to create a truly AI-native, sustainable, and collaborative future: ‘This democratization of expertise empowers employees to perform effectively, ensuring a new kind of business sustainability—one where institutional knowledge is not siloed but actively shared, built upon and transferred effectively across generations. Cross-generational knowledge transfer, previously unattainable at scale, is now within reach.’ Find out more about the book: https://brnw.ch/21wUmRo #AI #Architecture #ArtificialIntelligence #Research #Design #Sustainability

Your questions answered! Last month we asked you to submit your questions to Suzan Ucmaklioglu on Instagram. Suzan leads the practice’s Inclusive Design Team, which is a specialist team within the Technical Design Group. The team is championing an evolution from architecture’s compliance-focused accessibility model to an approach that is shaped by people-centred design and lived experiences. Suzan answers your questions about when inclusive principles are incorporated within the design process, how technology is helping to create more accessible spaces, and some of the common misconceptions about inclusive design. 🔗 Read The Column: https://lnkd.in/eb-xujwy #InclusiveDesign #Design #Engineering #Construction #Architecture
