On the hottest weekend of the year so far, over 100 local residents, quarry employees and their families joined together to take on the annual Whatley quarry loop challenge – a 4.5-mile sponsored walk around Whatley quarry in Somerset. Walkers of all ages set off early to beat the heat, stopping along the way to enjoy shaded rest spots, refreshments provided by our team and panoramic views from our new viewing platform. The challenge raised funds for local projects, including improvements to village facilities and support for community groups. Year 3 pupils from Alaw Primary School visited our Craig-yr-Hesg quarry in south Wales for a hands-on learning experience inspired by their favourite video game, Minecraft 🎮 The visit explored the game’s mining and building elements, giving pupils a chance to see mineral extraction up close and learn about the role quarries play in building roads, schools and other essential infrastructure. It was a great way to bring real-world operations to life and support learning beyond the classroom. 👉 Read more about the visit here: http://spkl.io/6048AHsuM #CommunitySupport #SocialValue #HeidelbergMaterialsUK #QuarryVisit #OneTeam

🌎 World Drowning Prevention Day is a reminder of the dangers that open water, including quarry lakes, can pose to life. Mineral Products Association's campaign, Stay Safe Stay Out of Quarries, is as important as ever, highlighting that not all bodies of water are safe for swimming or water-based activities. Quarry lakes may look inviting but cold water, sudden changes in depth and unstable exits make them extremely dangerous ⚠ Help us to raise awareness and prevent accidents by staying out of quarries and encouraging others to do the same. #RespectTheWater #StaySafeStayOutOfQuarries #DrowningPrevention #FloatToLive

15,000 tonnes of RAP on the rails. A train carrying 1700 tonnes of recycled asphalt planings (RAP) made the journey from Machen Quarry to Appleford Recycling Centre. This is part of a 15,000 tonne movement – a key step in reducing CO₂ emissions and road movements. The RAP will be repurposed in new asphalt mixes, supporting our 2030 commitments to sustainable construction and the circular economy. #HeidelbergMaterials #Recycling #Asphalt #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #LowCarbonLogistics #2030commitments

We’re glowing! 🌟 Our Ketton Quarry Nature Reserve in Rutland has seen record numbers of glow worms, including in new areas of the site they haven’t been previously recorded 🐛 It’s fantastic news as there has been a big decline in the number of glow worms found in the UK over the 30 years and is a great example of the biodiversity that exists at mineral extraction sites. The reserve, which is a restored part of our Grange Top quarry adjacent to our Ketton cement works, is home to a number of nationally scarce species of invertebrate as well as being a significant site for mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and wildflowers.
