  • This week’s #IWMFilm clip, shot in the Western Desert in August 1941, embodies the spirit of the ‘V for Victory’ campaign. In April 1941, the BBC European Service’s anti-Nazi radio campaign urged populations across Occupied Europe to show their defiance to the Germans by writing the letter ‘V’ wherever they could. This inventive propaganda gimmick proved to be a successful morale boost, inspiring Winston Churchill's famous ‘V sign’. Despite its success in emboldening occupied populations, ‘V for Victory’ also bred a culture of false hope across Europe that the Allied invasion, still three years away, was imminent. Each week we publish a clip from IWM’s extensive film collection, spanning the First World War to the 21st century. Watch the film in full: https://lnkd.in/etSkWbpx Film: IWM (WPN 24)

  • Congratulations to the Lionesses for their historic victory on Sunday! Women's football has grown into a global force, celebrated by fans and recognised at the highest levels. Despite a major surge in popularity during the First World War, and thousands of pounds raised for charity, the Football Association banned women from playing on Association-affiliated and league grounds in 1921, citing the sport as 'unsuitable for females'. In our latest video, we explore the forgotten history of women's football during the war, highlighting the trailblazers who kept the game alive beyond the ban and the impact their legacy has left on today's game. • Tim Hetherington was an award-winning photojournalist and filmmaker, known for his work documenting conflicts until his untimely death in 2011.   This #IWMFilm clip is from Hetherington's ‘Diary’ (2010). A meditation on Hetherington's past decade of war reporting, the film features abstract sound design and intercut scenes shot in Liberia. It is marked by an impressionistic stream of consciousness style that foregrounds memory, distinguishing Hetherington’s personal, documentary approach.   In November 2017, IWM acquired the complete archive of Tim Hetherington. It comprises his seminal photography and video work from Liberia (2003-2006), Afghanistan (2007-2008) and Libya (2011).   Explore and license Hetherington’s films: https://lnkd.in/exhiiDNu   Explore and license Hetherington’s photos: https://lnkd.in/eRCtAeHR   Film: IWM (MGH 7153)
