Today is World Lung Cancer Day 🫁 Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide — but early detection can make a life-saving difference. If you’ve had a persistent cough lasting more than 3 weeks, speak to your GP. It may be nothing serious, but getting checked is always the safest option. On this World Lung Cancer Day we want to celebrate the progress we have made over the last few years with Lung Screening. Our Lung Screening Programme has spread from its origins in Cornwall out to Plymouth, North Devon and Torbay. We now have four live sites running and scanning people in the hopes we can detect lung cancer sooner. People are eligible and will receive an invitation if they: Are aged between 55 and under 75 years old Have ever smoked Registered with their local GP For more information on our Lung Screening Programme we have a video from our Plymouth site which shows the process and explains the importance of attending when you receive your invitation. 📻 Out this Friday 01.08.2025 🎙️ Special Simply Oncology episode on the Language of Oncology. 💭 How we communicate is so important in all aspects of medicine. ✉️ Oncology letters are the lifeblood of communication for most patients care. ✉️ Our letters go to GPs and patients and we speak to Dr Anthony Cunliffe who is the medical lead for Macmillan Cancer Support and a practising GP. If you are GP, acute medic or nurse who treats cancer patients (or a patient with access to your letters) this is a MUST LISTEN. Grade, Stage, Intent of Treatment and molecular tests all tackled. Also those of us oncologists wanting to make our letters useful for GP teams there is a LOT to learn! We also try and explain the meaning behind the letters. Anthony takes us to task about parts of our oncology letters that would be more useful for GPs and patients. Hundreds of thousands of young people are being urged to come forward for their free HPV jab which protects against several cancers, including cervical, mouth and throat. The lifesaving vaccine is offered to all 12–13-year-olds in school, but more than 418,000 left school unvaccinated in recent years. The NHS is now reaching out to everyone aged 16-25 whose records show the did not get their HPV vaccination in school. Just one dose is now needed for long-term protection. This is all part of the NHS drive to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040, as set out in the 10 Year Health Plan – with invites now being sent via the NHS App, text, email and letter. Patient experience of care is incredibly important to the NHS and it’s a testament to the hard-working NHS staff that patients have, on average, given 8.94 out of 10 for overall experience of care in our 2024 National Cancer Patient Experience Survey (NCPES). This the highest result over the past four years. The NHS England #NationalCancerPatientExperienceSurvey aims to understand people’s experiences of cancer care across England. Cancer services use the survey results to make improvements based on what really matters to people. See the survey results: https://lnkd.in/e9DeD6P2

We're proud to be a part of delivering this pioneering project, using routine blood tests to help GPs identify early warning signs of cancer. Led by the University of Exeter, in partnership with Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and the Peninsula Cancer Alliance, this work is a powerful example of how research-driven innovation and collaboration can transform patient care. Alongside the NIHR Exeter Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), we look forward to providing further evaluation expertise and supporting its wider rollout. Find out more below.
A pilot project to help GPs spot early warning signs of cancer from routine blood tests has received £2.4 million to roll out, and test it is working. The NHS Cancer Programme, supported by SBRI Healthcare and the Accelerated Access Collaborative, has awarded the funding to the University of Exeter under the NHS Cancer Programme Innovation Open Call. In Devon, the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust tests 500,000 routine blood tests each year in the hospital laboratories. These tests include a platelet count. Platelets are tiny blood cells that help the body form clots to stop bleeding. Blood tests already include a platelet count as standard – and a high platelet count can sometimes be an indicator of certain types of cancer, including lung and bowel cancers. Levels of platelets vary depending on age, and whether a person is male or female. The Exeter team has developed an algorithm to apply more personalised thresholds, to more accurately pick up who might be at risk. The project is entitled High or Elevated Level of Platelets (HELP) Flag. It is currently being applied to results from a handful of GP practices in Devon. The new funding will enable the team to expand this number, and test how well the new system is working to detect cancer earlier, which improves patient outcomes and can save lives. Professor Sarah ER Bailey said: “I’m delighted that this new funding will give GPs accurate information on blood count for more patients, which could tell whether they’re at elevated risk. We know that catching cancer early can save lives, and we hope this may one day be expanded across the NHS.”

Please share this opportunity with your networks! I am leading on this great project to look at how we can increase Cancer Screening Uptake for people with Severe Mental Illness(SMI). I will be running this session along with colleagues at Healthwatch in Devon, Plymouth & Torbay, to learn more about people's lived experience of attending cancer screening appointments. What do we mean by Severe Mental Illness (SMI)? Well, diagnosis of conditions like Bi-polar, Schizophrenia, PTSD and psychosis all classify as an SMI, along with many others. Did you know that people living with a Severe Mental Illness are 2.3 times increased risk of cancer. There are many reasons for this, and we want to know how we can reduce this inequality by increasing the screening uptake for cancer. Please share this paid opportunity for people with a diagnosed Severe Mental Illness to share their experiences of cancer screening appointments.
🚨 Paid opportunity: share your story and help improve cancer screening access. Health Innovation South West is looking for people with a severe mental illness who have attended a cancer screening appointment to take part in a paid workshop. We want to understand your experiences so we can help improve access to appointments and care for others. 🗓 Workshops take place in August 💻 Includes an online session and a day in-person workshop in Exeter 💷 £16.00 per hour paid If you're interested in taking part, please contact Emily.vanVliet@healthinnovationsouthwest.com Or contact directly via our form: https://lnkd.in/eYpBMFRc #MentalHealth #CancerScreening #NHS #PatientExperience #HealthInnovation #PaidResearch #Exeter #ResearchOpportunity
