  • When someone you care about is going through a hard time, it can be normal to feel unsure about what to say. You might worry about getting it wrong - but the truth is, there is no perfect thing to say. And you don’t need to have all the answers. Just showing up, listening, and letting them know you care matters more than you think. We’ve put together a few simple things you can say to let someone know you’re there for them.

    • Word for when finding the right ones feels tough
    • I don't know exactly what to say but I'm here, and I'm listening. You're not alone
    • You matter to me and I'm not going anywhere
    • I don't have the answers right now, but we'll tackle this together
    • You don't need to be 'OK' around me, I'll take you exactly as you are

  • Trauma can affect anyone and for people working in high-risk environments like construction and transport, the impact can be significant. The latest ‘Understanding Mental Health in the Built Environment’ report from The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) highlights that almost 1 in 4 construction workers experience stress every day and 1 in 5 report fatigue on a daily basis. For organisations working in these environments, trauma awareness and proactive support can make a real difference. That’s why we partnered with Amey to co-develop and deliver a tailored one-day ‘Recognising and Managing Trauma’ course. The training equips Amey’s frontline employees with the confidence and skills to support themselves and their colleagues when dealing with traumatic experiences. Through our Samaritans Training and Engagement Programmes (STEP), we help organisations across many sectors to build healthier, more supportive workplaces.
