About us
innovation • regeneration • transformation shedkm is an innovative RIBA registered architectural practice working from liverpool, manchester + london. our work is rooted in regeneration. our distinctive approach results in bold, engaging schemes which are economically and socially transformative. shedkm practice socially responsive design. Our work demonstrates a people-first approach to placemaking, creating vibrant neighbourhoods and long-term social sustainability. we deliver innovation through strategic commercial thinking, a strong design rationale and modern construction methods deployed for speed and efficiency. our enterprising approach challenges design assumptions to add value for clients and end users. rigorous, rational yet playful, our ideas give buildings and places a strong identity which helps realise both commercial and social ambitions. building on the strengths and emotional connections inherent in the built and social fabric of a city, our thoughtful interventions create a rich and sustainable sense of place. each scheme is considered as a piece of the city, the spaces between as important as the individual buildings in expressing heritage, community and place. from our studios in london and liverpool, where we were established 25 years ago, we continue to be at the forefront of regenerative placemaking, with a UK-wide portfolio of transformational schemes, and vibrant new city neighbourhoods rooted in the historic urban grain. creating desirable places in which people want to live and work, impacts the economic viability of development and unlocks long-term commercial opportunity. shedkm works in partnership with clients to offer flexibility, pragmatism, and a proactive approach to problem solving. we are adept at working within the constraints of tight urban sites or limited budgets, maximising opportunities within a brief to add value.

great to see our zodiac house for Common featured in the NLA's new research report 'adaptive london: reusing existing buildings' among other 150+ examples showcasing best practice in the adaptive reuse of commercial buildings. zodiac exemplifies the potential of converting commercial properties into quality homes. by preserving the existing building, this redevelopment avoids the significant environmental impact of demolition and new construction, saving the equivalent carbon of planting 120,000 trees. its transformation highlights how such conversions can help address the urgent need for temporary housing with low environmental impact. find the research paper here: https://lnkd.in/e3pS66zv and read here more about zodiac house: https://lnkd.in/ePhES6kq

Inspiring day at my first The Developer and Festival of Place event. A packed and interesting schedule of panels and speakers and nice to see some familiar faces there too over lunch in the Boxpark venue. A big focus throughout the panels on health through placemaking, development and architecture. I particularly enjoyed hearing the key note speech from Professor Sir Michael Marmot on 'taking action to reduce health inequalities' as well as hearing panel points from John Lewis at Peabody on new towns and Imandeep Kaur at Civicsquare and Nigel Hugill, Urban&Civic on creating healthy and vibrant places. With the event hosted at Wembley Park I took the opportunity to join Julian Tollast from Quintain Living on a tour of the park to talk about creating a successful neighbourhood at Wembley that provides a 365 day place to live but also caters for major sporting and cultural events. Fascinating then to hear from TOWN and their designers on their major development in Cambridge at Hartree with health, density, community and green spaces were being built into their vision. Finally it was lovely to bump into civic&social who are helping to deliver real social value on shedkm's stockport 8 scheme for ECF and Stockport MDC.

great to see zodiac house featured in The Times. the transformation of this worn-out, concrete 1960s complex in west croydon into 73 homes has provided an ingenious solution to emergency housing needs in the area, contributing to place with new public realm and communal facilities.
“Could this ….become a model for solving London's housing crisis?” Andy Silvester Brilliant to have The Times’ Lucy Kenningham down to Zodiac, chat about the mission behind the project, and the journey taken to transform it from a derelict building into a new community asset providing homes for 73 families previously at risk of homelessness. “Zodiac was a lump of concrete that wasn’t going anywhere.
