A dynamic new innovation district for forward-thinking science and tech start-ups, scale-ups and global enterprises.

About us

Welcome to Sister, a new £1.7bn innovation district situated in the heart of Manchester’s knowledge quarter. A partnership between The University of Manchester and Bruntwood SciTech, we’re founded on the belief that ideas flourish where business, education and communities come together. Over the next 15 years, we’re transforming the University’s former North campus into a hub for science and technology innovation and a vibrant new neighbourhood. Here, exciting new start-ups will be located next to leading global corporations and cutting-edge research institutions. With new offices, homes, amenities and green spaces, it will be a place to work, live, meet, collaborate and spark the ideas and inventions that change the way we live. The Renold Innovation Hub opens in Autumn 2024 as a new home for the North West’s most promising entrepreneurs, start-ups and spin-outs. A catalyst for innovation and a home for creativity, we’re creating a collaborative ecosystem where growing and established companies can work together with funders, advisers and supporters to accelerate business growth and build a better future for Manchester and beyond. Get in touch to find out how to join our community of innovators.

On recent visit to the Sister innovation hub, I spoke with James Byrne to discuss the current state of play for climate tech start ups, and how an ecosystem approach is key for these companies to scale. Visit the UKTN website to read our exclusive coverage!

Climate tech holds a unique place within the UK’s wider tech industry. It is one of the best-funded subsectors in UK tech, but also one of the toughest areas for firms to scale. Supporting businesses through to maturity is not simply a way to boost the country’s finances, but an existential imperative. TropiConnect turns One 🥳🤩 All Glory to God❤️ What started as an idea has grown into a bold mission: (here a few highlights) - All started with winning the VFA (UK’s leading Uni start-up competition) - Launched several successful pilots with leading buyers and cooperatives in East Africa representing 200,000+ small holder farmers - Presented TropiConnect at leading events like UNIDO World without Hunger Conference and GITEX Europe (leading tech conference in Europe) - Held high level talks with Agri-tech leaders and government institutions like Ministry of Trade and Co-operatives in Uganda - Joined lovely ecosystems like Sister Manchester, Innovate UK etc But like any real journey, it came with lessons: 💡 Vision is vital, but execution is everything 💡 Real change takes trust, patience, and persistence 💡 Listening to your consumers and putting them at the cetre is the key to building the right platform As we celebrate this milestone, we look ahead with even greater purpose. A little secret between me and you 😉our official launch to the public is around the corner and can’t wait to share that with you, STAY TUNED🚀😌 Huge shout out to everyone who has really been a part of us in this journey, Grateful 🙏🏽 PS: More about our past events and what to expect in the future to come soon. As always: WE JUST GETTING STARTED!!! #launch#sustainability#FarmToWorld#TropiConnect#Grateful

【TropiConnect: One Year, One Mission】 EP1 Rooted in Purpose: Who Are We One year ago, TropiConnect began with a simple question: What if African farmers could access global markets fairly, directly, and sustainably? We founded TropiConnect to answer that question and to bridge a long-standing gap. Despite growing some of the world’s most valuable crops, African farmers often remain disconnected from the value they help create. Today, as we mark our first anniversary, we’re reminded why we started: - To empower smallholder farmers - To promote ethical, transparent supply chains - To turn sustainability from a label into a daily practice We are not just building a platform. We are building a movement — rooted in values, grounded in partnerships, and inspired by the people behind the products. 🌍 From farm to world — one connection at a time. This post is part of our 1st anniversary series: TropiConnect: One Year, One Mission — a three-part reflection on our journey so far, and what comes next. Thank you to everyone who’s believed in us since day one. Your support has made this mission possible. TropiConnect empowers African farmers and delivers ethically sourced and premium products to the world. #TropiConnect #SustainableFarming #FairTrade #AgriTech #AIforGood #Blockchain #TropicalCoffee #EthicalSourcing #UNIDO #UniversityofManchester #SDGS

🍇𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭: 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 🍔 Today we attended the Green Hospitality Network's Sustainable Food event hosted by Open Kitchen, pro-manchester, Marketing Manchester and Green Economy at the wonderful Sister. Professionals from Greater Manchester’s restaurants, hotels, bars, venues and attractions joined forces to learn more about reducing food waste, avoiding green-washing and how to embrace a sustainable food future. If food waste was a country it would be the third largest emitter in the world after the US and China. In the UK alone, around 10 million tonnes of food goes to waste each year, so it's vital that we work to address this issue. 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬: ♻️ Reduce, reuse, recycle is an order of preference 🛍️Provide the option to take away leftovers from events or restaurants 👀 Make sustainability mainstream within your organisation and use this as the lens through which every decision is made 📢 Actively tell people that you’re trying to reduce food waste through signage and announcements 📃Get evidence, set targets and report on everything ✅ Remember, no product is perfect - it’s about making good choices and trying your best to do better Read our full event round-up here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e7fe_Gum Join the Green Hospitality Network to gain some valuable insights and learn more about our next event which will be announced soon 👉 https://lnkd.in/ef6rjucc Corin Bell | Richard Walker #BeeNetZero #FoodWaste #Hospitality #Tourism #FoodService
