  • When we restore forests, we support healthier coastal and marine ecosystems 🌳🐟 That’s the finding of the Ocean Forest Links report, which we’ve produced with Dr. Benjamin Phillips 🔍 Drawing together more than 270 peer-reviewed studies from around the world, the report explores the important interactions between oceans and forests 🌱 Head to our website to learn more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eDu9aJ52   #NatureRecovery #TemperateRainforests #Conservation

  • During the 20th century many ancient woods were cleared and replanted with conifer plantations for timber production 🌲 As these non-native trees grew, woodland light levels dropped and the precious wildlife, history, soils and seeds of our ancient broadleaf woods were lost or buried. Thousands of these plantations in England and Scotland are ready for harvesting. If they are felled and replanted with conifers, their ancient woodland remnants could be lost forever 🌱 Our Forgotten Forests need us to save them – before it is too late ⚠️ Head to our website and ask your government to rescue our Forgotten Forests 👉 https://bit.ly/3HPMX2H #AncientWoodland #Forestry #Conservation

  • Despite being surrounded by many other trees, the Knole Park Oak is instantly recognisable 👀 It stands at a whopping 41 metres (135 feet) tall and is surprisingly slender for an oak. It is thought to be the oak that features in Virginia Woolf’s Orlando and, because of this, has bagged itself a spot in the shortlist for #TreeOfTheYear 🌳 This tree inspires the poem Orlando writes, titled The Oak Tree, which appears repeatedly throughout the book. • 🔎 Five signs that a woodland is in good ecological condition. ⚠️ As our report, State of the UK’s Woods and Trees 2025 reveals, our woods are in no fit state. 📉 In fact, while canopy cover is increasing in the UK, many woodland #wildlife species are on the decline. 🌳 This is because many of our woods lack the features of a healthy woodland: 1. High tree species diversity 2. A mix of tree ages, from saplings to ancient trees 3. Open spaces like glades and canopy gaps 4. Plenty of deadwood 5. No signs of tree pests or diseases ⚠️ Many of our woods lack these traits and it’s impacting our health as well as our wildlife. 💔 Woods in bad condition are less effective at boosting the health of those who live beside them, and can’t fulfil their role in mitigating the climate and nature crises. 💚 With the right help and support though, we can still bring our woods back from the brink. 👉 Learn more about the state of the UK’s woods and trees here: https://lnkd.in/e4chmFFQ 🎥 David McHugh / WTML

  • Trees and hedges on farms significantly boost butterfly numbers! 🦋 🔎 Research we've supported from the University of Oxford (WildCRU) and Butterfly Conservation has found that hedgerows, small woods and even individual trees can significantly increase the number of butterflies in farmed landscapes. 🌳 Ancient trees on farms are also linked with higher butterfly species richness! 🦋 Butterfly species such as speckled wood, gatekeeper, meadow brown, ringlet and comma were all found to benefit from more hedgerows and trees on farms. 📉 The findings couldn't come soon enough! Last year was one of the worst on record for butterfly numbers, and according to our State of the UK's Woods and Trees report woodland associated butterflies have declined by 47% since 1990. 💚 It's vital that farmers get support to plant and care for trees on farms. 🌱 We help farmers and landowners plant trees and hedgerows, and care for existing ones, to support wildlife and make farms more resilient to climate change. 👉 Learn more about the value of trees on farms for butterflies here: https://lnkd.in/egzmZQ-s #Butterflies #UKButterflies #BigButterflyCount #UKWildlife #TreesOnFarms #WildlifeNews #WildlifeResearch #Agroforestry #FarmWildlife

  • Bringing more trees onto farms can increase productivity, protect soils, support biodiversity and increase resilience to extreme weather 🌳🌾 The #AgroforestryShow on 10–11 September is the perfect place to learn about agroforestry and nature-friendly farming 🚜 Experience hands-on workshops, farm walks, live demonstrations, expert talks and more 🌱 Find out more and book your tickets 👉 https://lnkd.in/eut3TXfm Soil Association Sainsbury's Lloyds Banking Group

  • In 1537, Lady Jane Grey was born at Bradgate House. In its grounds sat an already impressive #OakTree. At approximately 825 years old, this is likely the oldest oak at Bradgate Park 🌳 Less than 50 metres away from the grand Tudor mansion, it’s possible that our shortest reigning monarch played beneath its boughs during her childhood.  Legend has it, when Lady Jane Grey was beheaded, Bradgate Park’s oaks had their upper branches removed in mourning. The rich history of this tree makes it the perfect contender for #TreeOfTheYear2025. Head to our website to vote for your favourite tree 👉 https://lnkd.in/eEztcx5A

  • Volunteers have helped us plant 38,000 trees and create a new woodland in Yorkshire 🌳 Hayhills Farm Wood is the latest acquisition for the #NorthernForest and is one of ten Lloyds Banking Group woods across the UK 🌱 Over the next 50 years, the newly planted woodland will store carbon, support wildlife and improve woodland access for local people 💚 Learn more about the Northern Forest, an ambitious project to plant 50 million trees from Liverpool to Hull 👉 https://bit.ly/4edyIkv Watch the full video: https://lnkd.in/embwSPWK White Rose Forest #NatureForClimate #GrowBackGreener

  • Pine martens spotted in our wood! 👀 🎥 Thanks to our volunteer Matt for this footage of pine martens exploring Cwm Mynach, our temperate rainforest site in Bontddu, Dolgellau, Wales. 🌙 Pine martens are notoriously difficult to spot as they are shy and primarily nocturnal. 🍒 Summer offers the best chance of spotting them, as females and their young can forage during the day at this time of year. 👉 Learn more about pine martens and how they're part of a healthy woodland ecosystem here: https://bit.ly/3Tic7tx #PineMarten #WoodlandTrust #TemperateRainforest #CelticRainforest
