How does network encryption work?

Te pongo un ejemplo super sencillo para que entiendas la encriptación simétrica. Imagina que tienes una caja que solo se abre con una llave. Ahora, sacas una copia de la llave y le das a un amigo. Para enviar un mensaje secreto a tu amigo, pones el mensaje dentro de la caja y la cierras el candado. Luego, le envías la caja a tu amigo. Cuando tu amigo recibe la caja, usa la copia de la llave para abrirla y leer el mensaje secreto. Es decir en la encriptación simétrica, la misma llave que usaste para cerrar la caja (para encriptar el mensaje) es la que se usa para abrirla (para desencriptar el mensaje). ¡Así es como funciona la encriptación simétrica!

Il faut d'abord à préciser que ce service utilise un chiffrement hybride : d'abord asymétrique (RSA, DHE, etc...) pour l'échange d'un secret partagé afin de poursuivre en symétrique (AES, DES, etc.) le reste des échanges (le chiffrement asymétrique étant bien sûr très lent car utilisant des clés très longue comprises entre 2048 et 4096 bits ). A côté de ça, il aussi les algorithmes de hash (SHA 256, 512, etc.) et le HMAC pour préserver l'intégrité des données échangées...Sans toutes fois oublier la mise en place des certificats et autres signatures numériques pour éviter l'usurpation des identités des communicants.

Understanding where, what, how, why and who will manage the encryption of data at different stages, is keep to deploy one of the most important preventive controls in today's industry. Ciphering was even used by our ancestor back in Egypt, Greece, Rome, etc. They had the same necessity to protect their information. They had unique keys to decipher the information and keep communications secure.

Hybrid encryption is the most effective way of using cryptography, by using this you get benfits of each type of encryption. HTTPS uses the same methodology where in the symetric key is exchanged using Asymetric encryption and then rest of the communication in encrypted via symentric key. Symetric encryption is quicker and easy to implement hence it is benficial to use for large data packets if we use asymteric encryption for the complete communication then it will be over head for the computer and result in latency, in some cases you may need to use high end computers to do the basic communication like HTTPS.

This is blatantly wrong. You should not be reading any article which says that encryption provides any benefit related to authenticity. Encryption itself does not inherently verify the data source and authenticity. Encryption primarily focuses on protecting data confidentiality and integrity during transmission.

Stop using the word encryption where you should be using cryptography. Cryptography is the science of concealing messages with a secret code. Encryption is the way to encrypt and decrypt data. The first is about studying methods to keep a message secret between two parties (like symmetric and asymmetric encryption), and the second is about the process itself. Encryption does not verify data nor does it verify authenticity or have qualities of non-repudiation. We have other cryptographic processes for those. Hashing is for verifying data is correct since the hash value was created. Signatures allow verifying the data has not been altered since being signed and provides non-repudiation plus man in the middle protection.

'Encryption' should be replaced with 'Cryptography'. It's the wrong term being used. I don't know which article you are referring to, but that's the only way I can see the terminology working.

Encryption is most basic security technique used in current processes, it is used for authentication, intgrity checking, secure connection and many more areas. It has number of benfits but each control comes with the cost, here the cost is in terms of compute power and latency. With the increase in the complexity of the encrytion, the compute power required for decryption and processing increases which ultimately result in the latency in the response. Other main concern with encryption is that it is completly dependent on the encryption keys, if the encryption keys are compromised then no matter how complex the encryption is, it will be of no use.

Agreed. The only thing I would add to this is regulatory compliance (as we still have to tick those boxes!). Oh the joys of box ticking.

The best prcatices for cryptograpy are as below: 1. Never use deprecated algorithms. 2. Ensure to protect encyrption key with highest degree of protection. 3. Rotate the KEK (Key Encryption Key) frequently. 4. Use secure method of key exchange in case of symetric encryption. 5. Dont use propritory encryption algorithms. 6. Keep back of encryption keys. 7. Use HSM to store encryption keys.
