Assigning a mentor that can help integrate you into the culture of the new position is always helpful. I have had this several times when being onboarded to varying levels of success. Generally, it is nice to have someone to talk to if you are unsure of something instead of having to build up the courage to talk to a new coworker.

It has been like only 4 months since I've started working in core HR, and if I say honestly till date I've never faced such situation, but I might face something like this in future. Offering different kinds of communication through different channels to a new comer introvert may help him to open up a bit with others. Changing the topic of the communication might also be a great option, like some introvert people might not like that basic and normal self introduction and all those formality, but when the topic of the communication is something related to his profession he might like to talk and discuss with his colleagues.

Introverts tend to like communications that are grammatically correct stay clear of abbreviations and give a deadline to reply by. They may show emotion in communications, they will ask how others are and may even contain an apology within their communications. Therefore, in communicating with them do exactly this; whether it's face-to-face virtually email or text because if you tend to treat them how they treat others you will get a much more positive response as well as making them feel at home in the new organisation.

When we onboarded one of our more introverted team members at WellWise, it was clear that the usual “jump right into meetings” approach wouldn’t work for her. She was thoughtful, observant, and highly capable, but hesitant to speak up in larger group settings at first. Instead of pushing for early verbal participation, we leaned into something we promote in our own wellbeing platform: meeting people where they are. We offered multiple communication options—starting with written channels like Slack and our own in-app message center. She felt more comfortable contributing in writing, where she had the time to think through her ideas and respond without pressure.

I would also include a final step of checking in privately to ask how they are doing and assess what’s working/not working. Ask good open ended questions like “What was the most valuable part of your onboarding this week?” Or “What’s one thing you were expecting from onboarding this week that you didn’t receive?” Listen, clarify, seek to understand and iterate as needed.
