Understanding virtual teams
- A virtual team is a group of individuals often spread out across different time zones from different cultures with different languages who are united by a common goal. In fact, one study found 79% of knowledge workers were occasional or frequent members of a virtual team. And over all, about 46% of organizations use virtual teaming. Traditional and virtual teams both go through Tuckman stages of team development, but the dynamics experienced by the members of virtual teams are more complicated. Virtual team members stay connected through technology and it's this reliance on virtual communication that exacerbates the geographical and cultural differences, which makes effective virtual teaming so challenging.
