- [Narrator] Next up we'll explore simplicity, perhaps one of the most misunderstood of the principles of design. After years of teaching design, I suspect the reason for this is because simplicity is intertwined with the concept of beauty, which is itself somewhat open to interpretation. While the phrase beauty is in the eye of the beholder is an idea that glorifies the subjective, there is also great validity in the idea of collective objective beauty in both art and design. As a matter of fact, I have two simple questions you can use to help with evaluating and applying simplicity to your designs, thereby improving their usability. But first, let's begin our exploration of simplicity by looking at its definition. Simplicity, or what some people call visual economy, means only showing what is essential in a design and nothing more.
