Ensure unique entries with data validation rules
- [Instructor] We're building a list on this worksheet called data validation. And in column B, we're putting in ID numbers. But already we've got a problem, we've got some duplicates. And what we want to do is prevent duplicates in column B. And furthermore, we want to make sure that those entries contain four characters, and only four characters. One approach, and it will simply alert us to duplicates, is to select column B. And then on the home tab in the ribbon off to the right, conditional formatting, there's an option, duplicate values. And you see what it does. It proposes a color scheme. We could go with that or try another one. Or go into custom format, if we wished. But the main idea is every time there's a duplicate, we know it, we see it. And so that's certainly valuable. But it doesn't prevent the entries. And that's what we would really like to do.
