The impact of status on meetings

- Meetings can reveal a lot about leadership. When run by a lean leader, they're collaborative, focused, and energizing. But under command and control manager, concerned with power and status, meetings are one-way directives, filled with silence, stress, and disengagement. A few years ago, while I was working with one of my clients where all managers as a group had been reading a book on team building, during the meeting, I posed a question, "Should we start implementing a team building framework based on what we've been reading?" Sadly, the VP of operations reacted, "Do we need therapy?" He asked. You can imagine how intimidating that was, and well, they never became a great team. Worst of all, trust and teamwork went down the drain. Have you been in such meetings, where a manager acts based on their status and inadvertently silences voices? When folks at the top act like bosses, it can make other people clam up, which can stop good ideas from coming out, and demotivate participants.…
