- Now in this next section, we're going to combine the planning and the doing into a matrix. And this is a whole new model that I've invented. I've never seen this anywhere before, but it seems to me fundamentally obvious that you have options about how much you involve people in the planning, and you have options in how much you control the action side of any job. So let's have a look at a completely new way of thinking about management style. So we've seen that we've got three options for how much we involve people in the planning, and we've got three options for how much freedom we give people when they then carry out the task. And that gives us a three by three grid. It gives us nine management style options. Now nine is rather a lot, but the good news is that about half of them are impossible or at least they're not viable, they're not sensible. So we're going to be able to rule out some of them.
