Overcoming resistance to change
- Change is uncomfortable for a lot of people. Us humans naturally like to stick with what's familiar and predictable because that feels safe to us. But in a workplace, change is going to happen whether we like it or not. (upbeat music) Here are three helpful tactics to help overcome both personal and organizational resistance to change. Communicate transparently. Transparency builds trust and understanding. I have talked to so many friends and colleagues who have learned about changes, and often negative changes at that, but they walk away from those conversations appreciative that they were told the truth. Involve key stakeholders early. You never want to drop an announcement or a major change with just a few days notice. Get other stakeholders involved in the decision-making process to create a sense of ownership and minimize any resistance. Acknowledge and validate emotions. If you want to create a conducive culture and atmosphere after announcing a change, you need to provide a safe space where people can express themselves, whether it's a one-on-one meeting, an all-hands meeting, or a group email alias that gets read by the leadership team. Whether the change is positive or negative, it's helpful to create an environment where feelings are acknowledged and respected.
