- When troubleshooting physical signal chains, the most obvious and universal strategy you're likely to come across is, try a different cable. If a system component is suspected to be faulty, replacing it with either the same or equivalent component is as straightforward as it gets. However, there is an alternative way of checking whether a cable is functioning properly, and that's a cable tester. These devices are commonly thought of as an audio professional's tool that you'll find in a repair shop or a touring tech's work box. I would argue that there is no reason why a performing musician or a studio creator shouldn't consider one. There are a wide variety of capable and inexpensive cable testers out there.
