- When it comes to MIDI related problems, a MIDI monitor is the first line of defense. To me, it's so indispensable that I almost always have it open in the background, even when nothing's broken. Consulting the MIDI monitor will always give you a clear picture of MIDI communications in your system, and whether you're making sure that everything is as expected or looking for clues in a problem scenario, seeing all the MIDI traffic in one place is crucial. There is plenty of MIDI monitoring software out there. This is a popular one by Snoize called simply, MIDI Monitor. All currently available MIDI ports are shown here in the Sources window. This is helpful in itself when you want to confirm what MIDI devices and ports are seen by the computer, although the MIDI Studio in Audio MIDI Setup is another very valuable resource for that.
