💷 Steel opportunities identified in UK in Heathrow expansion plan and abroad as EU category 17 quota opens up 1. Heathrow expansion: increased demand for UK steel The £21 billion investment in Heathrow Airport's expansion plans, officially published today, presents a substantial opportunity for UK steel producers. Past expansion projects, such as Terminal 5 (which utilized approximately 80,000 tonnes of steel), demonstrate the scale of material required for such undertakings. Today's newly-published plan shows significant expansion and rebuilding is expected surrounding the new third runway. This investment is expected to generate major demand for UK-made steel, creating businesses and employment opportunities across the steel supply chain. 2. EU Quotas secured: maintaining market access The UK Government's securing of country-specific quotas for Category 17 steel exports to the EU is another positive development. This decision ensures tariff-free access for UK steelmakers, allowing for the export of up to 27,000 tonnes of structural steel per quarter. This reinstalls access to a key export market and supports the continued competitiveness of the UK steel industry. 📑 In other trade news, earlier this week President Trump said that cuts to the US steel tariffs for UK steel imports are coming "pretty soon". The combination of increased domestic demand from the Heathrow expansion and the secured EU export quotas positions the UK steel sector for growth. Delivering zero US tariffs urgently will provide significant business and job security for our industry. #uksteel #heathrowexpansion #euexports #steelindustry Department for Business and Trade
