It's been 100 years since the first patient in the UK was successfully treated for diabetes using insulin at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust – a breakthrough that transformed type 1 diabetes care forever. Fast forward a century, and technology is once again revolutionising diabetes management. ‘This is my super pump!’ Watch as Ava-Rose shows off her very own 'super pump’, which acts as an artificial pancreas. This system uses a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and an insulin pump to manage her blood sugar levels – automatically adjusting the insulin she receives. Her mum, Lisa, said: ‘Thanks to this ground-breaking device, she is able to just be a four-year-old. We don’t have to think about injections or what she’s eating.’ The 10 Year Health Plan aims for more devices like this to become standard in preventative, chronic, and follow-up care treatments across the NHS.
