As part of the Te Ahu a Turanga Manawatū Tararua Highway Alliance, we just wrapped up one of Aotearoa’s most ambitious infrastructure projects — a brand new 11.5 km, four-lane highway connecting Ashhurst to Woodville. Starting back in January 2021, this vital link reconnects communities after the Manawatū Gorge closure, finishing two months ahead of schedule!⏱️ We tackled a number of challenges along the way, from the Parahaki Bridge — the widest balanced cantilever bridge in the Southern Hemisphere — to the innovative eco-viaduct built over a protected wetland. We also moved 6.5 million cubic metres of earth, completed 4.5 km of stream diversions, and planted 1.8 million native plants 🌱 The project was delivered through a collaborative alliance with NZ Transport Authority Waka Kotahi, Fulton Hogan, Aurecon, WSP and four iwi partners - Rangitāne o Manawatū, Rangitāne o Tāmaki nui-a-Rua, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Tāmaki nui-a-Rua and Te Rūnanga o Raukawa. This co-governance model saw iwi actively involved in design, delivery and decision-making at all levels 🤝 We’re so proud of what we’ve built together!
