This Week's Top 3 Future of Work Must Reads
These are my top three article picks for the week of February 6, 2023 on the future of work, AI, the Metaverse, leadership, and employee experience. This week's selection includes insights on reimagining performance reviews for remote and hybrid work, using ChatGPT to improve productivity
With remote and hybrid work, traditional performance reviews based on a top-down, hierarchical approach are becoming less effective for executives to understand the performance and contribution of their employees. Executives lose the peripheral vision they had in the office, and the Dunbar's number, the maximum number of people we can really know, shrinks from 150 to 50. The current method also needs more key information and often creates noise, resulting in confusion about who is driving value and who is creating drag in the organization. According to the article, to address this issue, companies should adopt a new approach called Organizational Network Analysis
You still haven't tried ChatGPT? The CEO of the firm behind ChatGPT believes that "generative text is something we all need to adapt to." The use of AI tools in the workplace can help improve productivity and make jobs easier, but it is crucial for companies to establish rules for employee use of these tools and for workers to be careful about misinformation. ChatGPT can be used for research, writing, data analysis, time management, and scheduling tasks. It can provide quick answers, analyze large amounts of data, and help prioritize tasks. Using AI tools in the workplace can free up time and make the job more enjoyable by allowing workers to focus on generating ideas and asking the right questions. ChatGPT is not always accurate but gets smarter with use and can provide quick answers and simplify complex information. According to the article, "Most companies also haven't established formal rules around employee use of the AI tool, though firms like Microsoft – a major partner and investor of ChatGPT's parent Open AI – have recently given employees the green light to use the chatbot for work purposes, as long as they don't share sensitive information with the site. My advice for leaders...Jump in with both feet, try it, and start developing the skill of communicating with and leveraging generative AI tools now.
