I’m excited to share that our article, “Analysis of Freight Train Passing a Stop Signal Using Machine Learning: Application of XGBoost and SHAP,” has been published in the Journal of Rail Transport Planning & Management and is now live on ScienceDirect — available for free download until August 13, 2025: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g5H28V7a This study was conducted at the Canadian Rail Research Laboratory(#CaRRL) in collaboration with co-authors Dr. Lianne Lefsrud, P.Eng., Dr. Michael Hendry, Asdrubal Cheng Cen, E.I.T., and Dr. Sara Soltaninejad, PhD, and was supported by key research and transportation organizations in #Canada and #Alberta. We integrated data from the Railway Occurrence Database System (#RODS), maintained by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada - Bureau de la sécurité des transports du Canada (#TSB), with geospatial and weather data. Using a machine learning model built with #XGBoost and interpreted through #SHAP, we identified the key environmental and track-related conditions that significantly increase the risk of #PASS (Passing a Stop Signal) incidents in Canadian freight rail operations. This work advances proactive, data-driven railway safety in Canada, especially under varying environmental and geographical conditions.
