Announced yesterday by the government, Sizewell C has secured full funding, confirming private investors’ backing Britain’s next nuclear power station. Construction is already underway on site and today’s announcement signals the start of a new key phase as the project moves full steam ahead. The Hargreaves Board had the privilege of an exclusive visit to the Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk recently. This immense and energy-critical project is currently home to a 180-strong Blackwell Earthmoving team that has played an integral part in the development, providing bulk earthworks, civils, and aggregate supply. The Board members, accompanied by the Blackwell Earthmoving Limited team, took part in a site tour and progress and safety update, which showcased some of the major milestones achieved to date, while also highlighting project plans for the coming years. Niall Fraser, Managing Director of Blackwell Earthmoving, commented; “The work delivered by Blackwell Earthmoving on the Sizewell C project is pioneering. It’s a project like no other and one that allows us to perfectly demonstrate our capabilities as a leading specialist earthmoving contractor. It is also a showcase example of how we work collaboratively with clients and the supply chain to fulfil environmental and community programmes of work for maximum positive impact.” In addition to the earthmoving provision, as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to social value, Blackwell Earthmoving has delivered over 500 hours of community outreach and social impact initiatives over the past year. An ongoing recruitment campaign, including the company’s ‘25 in 25’ campaign, which aims to increase the proportion of women in the workforce to 25% by 2025, has resulted in the creation of many new jobs. Sizewell C nuclear power station, once fully operational, will provide decades of clean, reliable electricity for around six million homes. Blackwell Earthmoving has launched its ‘25 in 25’ initiative with a bang! We're aiming for at least 25% women in our workforce in 2025, and we kicked things off with an exhilarating Women’s Taster Day for Sizewell C. Over 30 local women joined us to explore the world of plant operations and the exciting career opportunities that are on offer. They got hands-on with serious machinery, including a 30-tonne articulated dump truck. Paul Bird, Resources Lead at Blackwell Earthmoving, commented: “We're committed to improving gender balance in construction and building a stronger, more inclusive team. We’ve delivered training on our HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd around Aylesbury, over the past few years, which attracted more than 20 women. This event showed us that taster days are a fantastic way to familiarise newcomers with the industry, so they know what to expect and how their career can develop.
