From 14th May, new UK legislation requires that all landlords and tenants be screened against global sanctions and PEP (politically exposed persons) lists. These checks are now a legal obligation, with no exceptions, and failing to comply could lead to fines worth £1 million or 50% of the estimated value of the breach – whichever is higher. Make sure you’ve met your obligations To adhere to the new legislation, you’ll need to verify the identity of tenants and landlords, check that they don’t appear on the UK’s financial sanctions list, report any suspected money laundering or suspicious financial activity and, most significantly, monitor and report all tenancy agreements,  regardless of rental value.
