  • 'The future of British transport briefly exchanges glances with its industrial past.' In the latest edition of the Concrete Quarterly (The Concrete Centre) Chris Patience talks about the design and delivery of the HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd Colne Valley Viaduct in the UK. 'We wanted the structure to be responsive to the different contexts. Over water, maximising the views through the landscape by creating really wide spans. But in the dense woodland, straighter piers push the structure up above the canopy, maximising clearance below.' Now structurally complete, with an assembly that required its own on-site precast factory the Viaduct is ready to support the structural demands of future high-speed trains, but also distinctively responds to its landscape setting with elegance — 'a cohesive architecture form measured in kilometres rather than metres.' Read more here → https://lnkd.in/ej3w9BYc The Align JV (Bouygues Travaux Publics, VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd, Sir Robert McAlpine) with @Grimshaw, Rendel Ingerop Pty Ltd, Jacobs and LDA Design, was appointed by HS2 Ltd in 2017 to lead the design and delivery of the Colne Valley Viaduct, from concept design stage through to construction on-site, including extensive community and local stakeholder engagement and multiple Schedule 17 approvals. Prior to this appointment, Knight Architects and EDP (Atkins Jacobs Sener) were commissioned by HS2 Ltd to prepare a Specimen Design which explored initial concept design themes, formed the basis for early stakeholder engagement and raised design aspirations for the project.

  • A Quieter Civic Centre Grimshaw is proud to share our contribution to the Eddy Avenue Plaza Renewal, Stage 1 of the broader Central Station transformation. Working alongside Transport for NSW, the Transport Asset Manager of NSW (TAM) and Sue Barnsley Design and TKD Architects, this modest yet precise intervention reframes a high-traffic civic edge as a place of movement, clarity and care. The new kiosk is not a destination. It is a civic diagram. A sheltering structure that orients without overtaking, guiding flow rather than absorbing it. Designed for rhythm, not spectacle. Placed for connection, not congestion. This is architecture as interface: calm, coded and tuned to the city’s environment. At Grimshaw, we view civic renewal not as performance but as public stewardship. The Eddy Avenue project is a small act with large consequence. It edits the street, choreographs movement and signals the next chapter of Central's renewal. Image supplied by Transport for NSW. • 'The synthesis of ecological, cultural and technical considerations makes the Oman Botanic Garden one of the most complex projects in the world. It will set a benchmark for the safeguarding of our planet's precious life.' The Oman Botanic Garden is featured in the latest RIBA Journal and the journal's Gulf Issue, sharing the design story behind of what will become, when it opens, a celebration and showcase of Oman's unique landscapes and biodiversity. Grimshaw's Keith Brewis and Abhi Chauhan, spoke to the RIBA Journal about the balance between plant physiology and human comfort that has informed the design — developed with Arup — and the connection between the distinct habitats that visitors will experience. 'Our masterplan creates a necklace of buildings linked head to tail, forming an intuitive walking route.' What can Chinese cities teach us about the future of urban life? In this sharp and spirited episode, Tim Williams speaks with Austin Williams, senior lecturer at Kingston School of Art and director of the Future Cities Project. Together they explore how China's eco-cities are reshaping global conversations on planning, progress and power.   Austin is no ordinary critic. He has spent years dissecting the ideology behind urban form, questioning sustainability orthodoxies and challenging the limits of Western thinking. From Tianjin to Dongtan, he brings an unflinching eye to China’s city-building ambitions and a rare ability to link policy, culture and design.   This is more than a podcast about China. It’s an invitation to look beyond the Anglosphere, to ask what cities are for and who gets to imagine them. Along the way, Austin and Tim share reflections on their shared Welsh roots and the landscapes that shaped them. • Promotional artwork for the Grimshaw Podcast episode titled “China’s Urban Revolution.” The background is a vibrant, abstract blend of saturated colours—deep reds, rich blues, glowing purples, and bright teals—that blur and swirl together behind a subtle black grid, evoking the dynamism of city lights and digital mapping. The podcast title is displayed prominently in large, modern white type across the centre: “CHINA’S URBAN REVOLUTION.” At the top left, in smaller uppercase text, it reads “GRIMSHAW PODCAST.” Below the title, a caption in white and magenta states: “Austin R. Williams, Senior Lecturer & Author, in conversation with Tim Williams.” The overall aesthetic suggests energy, complexity, and transformation—reflecting the rapid pace and bold scale of urban development in China, which is the subject of the episode.
  • Martin Place Metro Station in Sydney has been shortlisted in the Completed Buildings: Transport category at the World Architecture Festival Awards 2025! Led by Grimshaw, this transformational project in the heart of Sydney’s CBD is Australia’s first truly integrated station development. It brings together metro infrastructure, two commercial towers, retail, and vibrant public realm into one connected precinct. Developed over nine years in collaboration with Macquarie Group and Sydney Metro, the design delivers a seamless street-to-platform experience. A permeable ground plane, generous daylight-filled atria, and civic-scaled entrances create a calm, intuitive environment that strengthens Sydney’s urban fabric and supports the city’s long-term growth. Martin Place sets a new benchmark for transport architecture. It combines sustainability, customer-focused design, and place-making to provide not just a station but a civic destination that reflects the identity and aspirations of Sydney. Martin Place Metro is one of three Grimshaw-led projects shortlisted at WAF this year, alongside the Croton Water Filtration Plant in New York and the Athens International Airport Expansion in Greece. • The Inclusive Design Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work was launched two years ago and, this week, Grimshaw's Wynne Leung is taking part in a livestreamed panel discussion which will share implementation and impact stories of the overlay. The design of the Elizabeth line — the 2024 RIBA Stirling Prize winner — will be shared to explore how accessible and inclusive places can be realised. With a focus on passenger experience, the Elizabeth line, since it opened in 2022, has been recognised as an exemplar of transport architecture: integrating space, light, wayfinding, and operations to enhance wellbeing and enable intuitive, enjoyable journeys. • The Croton Water Filtration Plant in New York has been shortlisted in the 2025 World Architecture Festival, a finalist in the Completed Buildings: Production, Energy and Logistics category. Located in the Bronx, the plant — filtering and delivering 290 million gallons of water per day, up to 30% of New York's potable water supply — is not only a critical piece of infrastructure but has also become a place of recreation, biodiversity, natural habitat and park restoration. Responsible for the design of all the above ground buildings and landscape strategy, Grimshaw has worked with NYC Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP), NYC Department of Design and Construction and NYC Department of Parks & Recreation across the whole programme of work, including the design of the arrivals and receiving buildings for the facility as well as, in the later phases, the Mosholu Golf Club and a viewing platform. The Croton Water Filtration Plant is one of three Grimshaw-led projects, including Athens International Airport in Greece and Martin Place Metro in Sydney, Australia, to be shortlisted this year! • The 2025 World Architecture Festival Awards shortlist is out and Athens International Airport Expansion has made it through as a finalist in the Future Project: Infrastructure category. Led by an international team including Grimshaw, Haptic Architects, K-STUDIO, Arup, Leslie Jones Architecture, Triagonal - Information Design and Plan A Consultants Ltd, the design concept brings together the existing and the new airport facilities to enable the airport to increase its passenger capacity from 26 to 40 million by 2032, through a phased upgrade within a live operational airport. This unifying concept also responds to its context through architecture, materiality, landscape and the Athenian life. And two microcosms of this, a north and south oculus, create real Mediterranean experiences and gardens, to meet, wait and reflect: destination and dwelling places in an inherently transient environment. Athens International Airport is one of three Grimshaw-designed projects, including the Croton Water Filtration Plant in New York and Martin Place Metro in Sydney, Australia, to be shortlisted this year!
