Our Hitachi Rail UK team in Toronto came together to celebrate the successful delivery of the most complex phase of the Four Lines Modernisation (4LM) resignalling project in London. We welcomed special guests from Transport for London to mark the occasion and reaffirm our strong partnership between our CBTC teams in Toronto, London and Portugal. This important milestone represents years of dedication, strong collaboration, and technical excellence delivering one of the most significant signalling upgrades in the world, modernising 40% of the entire network. Congratulations to everyone involved in this milestone. 🎥 Watch the full video and story behind this signalling project here 👉 http://bit.ly/3INOEhT #CBTC #UrbanMobility #4LM #TeamHitachi

Hitachi Rail contributed to the STEAM to the Future, a flagship event of the S&DR200 Stockton & Darlington Railway’s bicentenary – commemorating 200 years since the world’s first passenger railway journey. This immersive exhibition celebrates the North East’s legacy of rail innovation while looking firmly ahead. At Hitachi Rail, that future is being shaped in County Durham, where we’re pioneering cutting-edge battery train technology. 🔋 Battery-powered trains represent a transformative shift for Britain’s railways – cutting carbon emissions, lowering noise, and advancing a cleaner, more sustainable network. It’s a new chapter in rail’s modern revolution, taking root exactly where it all began. As part of our Railway200 celebrations, we sat down with Mitsuo Iwasaki, Head of Japan Business, whose career has helped shape the vital rail link between Japan and the UK. Since joining Hitachi Rail in 1998, Iwasaki-san has played a key role in delivering iconic projects - from Japan’s Shinkansen to the UK’s Class 395, 800, and 385 trains. 🚆 He shares insights on building lasting UK–Japan partnerships, establishing our Newton Aycliffe factory (just a few miles from the world’s first public railway!), and why long-term investment in communities matters. Our digital signalling solutions, such as European Train Control System (ETCS), are helping to enhance railway systems around the world 🚈🚉 ETCS works by using trackside signals to communicate with the train and to monitor the trains movement and speed limit on the track. The technology can enable trains to travel with greater reliability at higher speeds, increasing capacity on the track. 🚦 What happens when you hand 8-year-olds a smart train kit and ask them to design the city of the future? You get buggy code, brilliant ideas, challenging questions, and a glimpse of the next generation of railway engineers in action. As part of the Coding the Capital event at the London Transport Museum, Hitachi Rail STEM Ambassadors supported students in coding train routes, solving city-sized challenges, and exploring the magic behind how modern railways work. These workshops are part of the Enjoyment to Employment initiative, a powerful collaboration tackling the UK’s engineering and green skills gap by starting where it counts: early. Kerri Whatley was lucky enough to support one of these sessions and left inspired by the students’ energy, teamwork, and curiosity.
