After weeks of investigation, Spanish officials say they've tracked down the cause of one of Europe's biggest power outages. Could the same happen where you live?

NEWS: We've boosted the capacity of over 275km of overhead lines, which could save consumers an estimated ~£20m annually and power an additional 75,000 homes per year. How? Our overhead lines team worked with LineVision - part of the National Grid Partners investment portfolio - to install Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) sensors on circuits between one of the major North-South power system boundaries. Our 2024-25 Annual Report is now live. It's a year since we announced our £60 billion five-year investment plan and refocused our strategy on energy networks. I’m hugely proud of all we’ve achieved at National Grid in that time.   I’d like to share a few of my personal highlights: we’ve made excellent progress with our Great Grid Upgrade in the UK – of our 17 ASTI transmission projects, all six in the first wave are under construction; our $4 billion Upstate Upgrade in New York is on track – it’s the largest upgrade of the upstate electricity transmission grid in a century; we've agreed our $2 billion plan to modernise the electricity grid in Massachusetts with the regulator – increasing network capacity and resilience; we're continuing the development of our LionLink interconnector, the second to link the British and Dutch electricity grids, reinforcing security of supply; and we’re investing in innovation - $100 million in AI start-ups, in addition to the $500 million we’ve already invested in tech start-ups.    National Grid is now well positioned to take advantage of the significant growth opportunities ahead while ensuring the safe and reliable flow of energy for our customers and supporting economic growth in our communities. After 35 years at National Grid, and nearly 10 years as Chief Executive, I have decided to retire from my role and will step down on 16 November this year. It has been an immense honour for me to lead the company I joined as a graduate. All that I have achieved has only been possible because of the many talented people I have had the privilege to work with and learn from.    With our position as a leader in energy networks across the UK and US assured, we are well placed to take advantage of the growth opportunities ahead. I am delighted to hand over to Zoe Yujnovich who has all the attributes required to deliver on the significant growth opportunity ahead and to guide National Grid on the next stage of its journey. There is still much to deliver before I retire from my role in November. It became clear just how serious an incident this was when I arrived at our North Hyde substation in West London early on Friday. Seeing the fire burning and the scale of the response on the ground brought into sharp focus our key priorities of safety, reliability and resilience, and reinforced how critical the support of #emergencyservice workers is in situations like these.  Thank you to the London Fire Brigade and the Police. I’d also like to thank our National Grid colleagues, who worked through the night and weekend in hugely challenging conditions, both on site and in our control room, to manage the situation. It’s a testament to their calm, diligence, expertise and professionalism that this was done safely and efficiently.   Our focus was twofold: to mange the situation safely at North Hyde, and to ensure the rest of our network, including our other substations which feed #Heathrow and the surrounding area, continued to operate smoothly throughout.  As I said when I spoke to the media on Friday, our thoughts have been with all those impacted.  Now it’s right and proper that we have an investigation into the cause of this incident. It’s too early to speculate and we will work closely with all parties involved as that progresses.
