Today is the International Day of Friendship, which celebrates the power of friendships between people, countries, cultures and individuals. 🫂 At the RUH, we are proud to have staff from many different countries and backgrounds. One way we celebrate this and promote friendships and understanding is with the Intensive Care Unit’s (ICU) International Food Day event, which the department hosted earlier this month. Their departments Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team invited staff from across the RUH to share a dish from their culture with colleagues, as well as a fun fact behind it. The joyful event was an opportunity to come together and find out more about people’s heritage as well as their different cultures and traditions – particularly those related to food. Some of the traditional dishes included: - Staples of large Filipino gatherings and parties, such as lechon (roasted pork belly), lumpia (Filipino spring rolls) and pancit (Filipino rice noodles) - Ladda, a traditional Indian sweet representing joy, goodwill and prosperity, which has symbolic important at many festivals, religious ceremonies and other celebrations - South African milk tarts - Fried rice from Hong Kong - Welsh cakes - Pigs in blankets and mini Yorkshire puddings from the UK - Basque cheesecake from Spain - Cashew soup from Ghana and many more! 🌍 🎶 Each dish was paired with a song on a shared playlist, making the event full of fun, laughter, memories—and amazing food! 😄🍴💃 The event is now an annual tradition, and a highlight on the calendar for many of the team. As Nurse Seb Stellus, a member of the ICU’s EDI team, said: “It is a way of bringing people together and learning about where people have come from and their different cultures and traditions. Food is emotional. It connects people.”

In just two days, I learned so much from everyone I met—during ward rounds and in clinic—and I saw first-hand the incredible teamwork and patient care. It’s been such a valuable and inspiring experience as I look ahead to applying for medicine.
