  • It's been 100 years since the first patient in the UK was successfully treated for diabetes using insulin at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust – a breakthrough that transformed type 1 diabetes care forever. Fast forward a century, and technology is once again revolutionising diabetes management. ‘This is my super pump!’ Watch as Ava-Rose shows off her very own 'super pump’, which acts as an artificial pancreas. This system uses a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and an insulin pump to manage her blood sugar levels – automatically adjusting the insulin she receives. Her mum, Lisa, said: ‘Thanks to this ground-breaking device, she is able to just be a four-year-old. We don’t have to think about injections or what she’s eating.’ The 10 Year Health Plan aims for more devices like this to become standard in preventative, chronic, and follow-up care treatments across the NHS.   Find more information about wearable technology. https://lnkd.in/eR2id69U

  • ‘A trip to the bingo basically saved my life.’ When Paul went for a lung health check at a mobile scanning van at his local bingo hall, clinicians from Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust found an abdominal aortic aneurysm – a swelling in the artery that carries blood from the heart to the tummy. ‘I was shocked as I was in no pain, but in hindsight, the only symptom I had was a pulsing feeling in my stomach.’ Two weeks later, he was admitted to Heartlands Hospital where he underwent a five-hour life-saving operation. Now, Paul is recovering well and was discharged in time for his child’s 21st birthday. He urges everyone, ‘If you’ve had an invite from your GP, then go. Sandwell’s lung health check saved my life, and it could save yours too.’ The 10 Year Health Plan aims to bring NHS services closer to communities and detect illnesses earlier. A key initiative is the Lung Cancer Screening Programme, with mobile scanning units in accessible locations like supermarket car parks. These lung health checks focus on current and past smokers. As part of the plan, the programme will be expanded nationwide to ensure everyone with a history of smoking has access to early screening and diagnosis. Find out more about how the 10 Year Health Plan is expanding services like this, to make an NHS that is fit for the future. https://lnkd.in/eR2id69U #WorldLungCancerDay

  • See how dispensing robots are helping one London pharmacy spend more face-to-face time with patients. At Junction Pharmacy in Brixton, robots automatically dispense medications and manage stock, allowing staff to focus on providing additional patient services. Thank you team for showing us how innovation is transforming patient care. Read more about how we will transform care in the 10 Year Health Plan. https://lnkd.in/eR2id69U

  • Meet 11-year-old Kate, one of the many cystic fibrosis patients who could benefit from a new treatment – Alyftrek®️. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition that causes thick mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system, making it harder to breathe and causing infections. This means patients often have regular hospital visits to receive treatment. This new once-a-day drug can reduce the need for multiple hospital appointments, making a huge difference to the lives of patients and their families. Innovative therapies, like this, are one of the many ways the NHS is working to shift care from hospital into the community. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e-S6uqzS

    • 'We're hoping this new treatment will reduce the need for oral antibiotics and even better still, IVs. An added bonus is that it is a once a day dose'. Catherine, Kate's mum
    • Kate stands, posing and smiling with her mum, dad and sister on a sunny waterfront promenade with historic stone buildings in the background.
  • The iconic London cab reimagined for patient care. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust has rolled out a fleet of 12 white ‘taxi ambulances’ – London EV Company hybrids designed for non-emergency patient transport. They’re fully wheelchair accessible and built for comfort with ramps, swivel seats and braille switches. So far, they’ve travelled 60,000 miles and supported over 13,000 patients – providing a quieter, more spacious and accessible ride to those who need it most. It’s another way NHS teams are improving care for patients who might struggle to get to hospital on their own. This is the kind of innovation that the 10 Year Health Plan is building on to create a more connected, patient-focused NHS: https://lnkd.in/eR2id69U

  • Hundreds of thousands of young people are being urged to come forward for their free HPV jab which protects against several cancers, including cervical, mouth and throat. The lifesaving vaccine is offered to all 12–13-year-olds in school, but more than 418,000 left school unvaccinated in recent years. The NHS is now reaching out to everyone aged 16-25 whose records show the did not get their HPV vaccination in school. Just one dose is now needed for long-term protection. This is all part of the NHS drive to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040, as set out in the 10 Year Health Plan – with invites now being sent via the NHS App, text, email and letter.
