  • Are you a UK-based researcher or innovator who was successful in a Horizon Europe Work Programme 2021, 2022 or 2023 call? If you haven’t yet applied for the Horizon Europe guarantee, here’s an important reminder that the final application deadline is 27 November 2025 at 4pm (UK time).   With all guarantee-eligible calls having announced their results, nearly all potential applicants should be in a position to apply to the guarantee.   Key information: > The guarantee will continue to support UK-based researchers and innovators who receive a formal notification of success from the European Commission (EC) for eligible 2021 – 2023 calls. Those who have not yet applied for funding through the guarantee must submit their applications to UKRI by 27 November 2025 at 4pm (UK time). > Applicants will have a minimum of three months from notification of success from the EC to apply. This ensures that those who are notified later will still be able to access support and funding through the guarantee. > Projects already funded by the guarantee will continue to receive support as planned. The Horizon Europe guarantee has supported over 4,300 projects with more than £2.18 billion in funding, ensuring continuity while association negotiations took place. With the UK’s participation in Horizon Europe now secured, UK applicants are eligible to take part directly in Horizon Europe 2024 Work Programme calls and beyond, receiving funding directly from the European Commission. 📢 We are delighted to announce that our Exec Chair, Professor Michele Dougherty, has been approved by His Majesty The King to be the new Astronomer Royal, and will be the first woman to hold this position since the role was first created in 1675. ℹ️ The role of Astronomer Royal was first created with the goal of discovering how to determine longitude at sea when out of sight of land, and the holder of this position was historically based at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Today, the role is an honorary one, awarded to a prominent astronomer who is expected to advise the Monarch on astronomical matters.   Speaking of her new appointment, Michele said:   “I am absolutely delighted to be taking on the important role of Astronomer Royal. As a young child, I never thought I’d end up working on planetary spacecraft missions and science, so I can’t quite believe I’m actually taking on this position. In this role, I look forward to engaging the general public in how exciting astronomy is, and how important it and its outcomes are to our everyday life.” UK Research and Innovation’s CFO and Accounting Officer, Siobhan Peters, said of the appointment:   "Warm congratulations to Professor Michele Dougherty on her appointment to the distinguished position of Astronomer Royal. This honour is both a richly deserved recognition of Michele’s lifelong work and commitment to the field of astronomy and a fantastic platform from which to celebrate the importance of scientific research in our understanding of the Universe. We hope it will inspire many more people to consider astronomy and space science as a future career." • Science centres and museums are perfectly placed to be those bridging organisations between researchers and the public Through the Mindsets and Missions programme – a pilot learning and grants programme – we’ve supported 12 organisations across the UK to engage with 7,800 people from underrepresented backgrounds, including those with learning difficulties, refugees and people in the early stages of dementia, with research and innovation. We’re pleased to share insights from the programme which will be useful for everybody wanting to engage the public with research and innovation in equitable and ethical ways. Key findings include: 🔹Museums and science centres can help the public connect with a wide range of research and innovation topics 🔹Engagement can be more meaningful when communities are given ownership over new research and knowledge production 🔹Underrepresented communities see museums and science centres as a powerful way to share knowledge about themselves and be represented in the wider world. Today, we are excited to share the insights from this programme including the impacts of the projects, and written and filmed case studies -https://lnkd.in/ert-qWR2 Or watch the video summary below 👇 Mindsets + Missions was funded by UKRI in partnership with Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and delivered in partnership by Museums Association, Association for Science and Discovery Centres and The Liminal Space

  • We’ve been working with BBC Ideas on a series of short films that are based on research we have supported. The latest episode ‘'What happens when your mum goes to prison?' explores the consequences children face when their mothers are imprisoned and features Dr Shona Minson of the University of Oxford.   In the UK, more than half of women in prison are mothers. Research by Dr  Minson, winner of Outstanding Early Career Impact at the ESRC 2019 Impact Prize Awards, has helped change practice for judges, magistrates and Probation Officers, encouraging them to consider how children will be affected by their parents’ sentence    Watch the film here: https://lnkd.in/eyNY5yzn
