Last week we were joined by Jody Nunn, CEO of Reconciliation WA as part of our NAIDOC week celebrations. Main Roads is soon to release our first ever Stretch RAP and it was a great pleasure to have Jody speak to us about ReconciliACTION. Here are some of the key takeaways that Jody left us with: ⚫ NAIDOC week is about celebrating all that is Aboriginal culture. All of us should take a moment of reflection and consider that when you are working alongside someone who is Aboriginal you are working with a person who represents more than 3000 continuing generations on the country that we are in. 🟡 We all have circles of influence, they can be small or large, don’t ignore them but challenge yourself to think about what you can do within that sphere to affect change and make a difference. 🔴 Reconciliation is grounded in truth, opportunity and respect, without that we cannot move forward. In her conclusion Jody made the observation that reconciliation moves at the speed of trust, its highly relational. She said, it’s not just about approaching someone when you want something, it’s about maintaining the relationships in between and keeping that connection. But she warned us that these types of relationships take time, respect and continuity. There is a lot there for all of us to think about as we reflect on 50 years of NAIDOC honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience. This year’s theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," celebrates past achievements and a bright future ahead. Our Stretch RAP “The Road to Jobs and Opportunities” which will be released soon, will build on these messages.

👷 The transition from road maintenance contracts back to an in-house delivery model has created 550 new permanent jobs and increased employment opportunities, particularly in regional WA. More than 420 of these jobs were filled by employees previously working for contractors. Our in-house maintenance transition has also increased Aboriginal business opportunities with more than 115 Aboriginal businesses now part of the Main Roads’ panel contracts for in-house maintenance. This NAIDOC Week, we are celebrating the achievements of Aboriginal peoples and businesses who contribute to our projects and work across the state. 🎬 Watch our video to learn more about the journey of returning to in-house maintenance and hear from some of our most experienced contractors who are now permanent Main Roads employees.

🔑Creating sustainable opportunities for Aboriginal peoples and businesses in our projects and operations is a key area of focus for Main Roads. As part of our reconciliation commitments, we are working on removing barriers and providing support to encourage participation by Aboriginal suppliers and employees through actions such as consulting with Aboriginal businesses and industry organisations during development of relevant strategies and policies and building respect and awareness across cultures for positive change and inclusive workplaces. This year, NAIDOC Week (6-13 July) marks a powerful milestone: 50 years of honouring and elevating the voices, cultures, and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. ⚫🟡🔴 The 2025 theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," celebrates achievements of the past and the bright future ahead. Main Roads is proud to celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal peoples and businesses working on our projects across the state. ℹ️To find out more about the positive impacts Aboriginal participation and engagement has had across our work and projects visit https://lnkd.in/g-WjyiMH

📢 Main Roads Western Australia in conjunction with NTRO - National Transport Research Organisation (NTRO) and Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR QLD) have won a prestigious International Road Federation (IRF) award at the annual IRF Awards in Athens. Main Roads, NTRO and TMR QLD’s joint project ‘The impact of bushfire on infrastructure and a framework to incorporate bushfire resilience in road design’ won the IRF’s Emergency and Disaster Response Management Award.🥇 🔥 With the increased severity and frequency of bushfires, we recognised there was a critical need for a guidance framework applicable across all stages of a road project lifecycle, including planning, design, maintenance, and operations. This framework was developed through NTRO’s collaborative research programs with Main Roads (the Western Australian Road Research and Innovation Program – WARRIP) and TMR QLD (the National Asset Centre of Excellence – NACOE). ℹ️ To find out more about the project visit https://lnkd.in/g5HE2zYq
