  • Inequalities still persist throughout the healthcare system - dismantling them will require sustained, system-wide collaboration.   Whilst we acknowledge the amount of work still required, the steps we have taken in our work on Fair Training Cultures and Fairer Employer Referrals have been recognised in the Professional Standards Authority’s latest report, ‘Lessons from meeting our EDI standards for regulators – good practice guidance’, published earlier today.   Originally launched to meet our targets to eliminate disproportionate referrals by 2026 and unfairness in medical education and training by 2031, it's encouraging to see that the gap in referral rates between ethnic groups — and between UK and non-UK graduates — continues to narrow, as does the attainment gap for international medical graduates.   We'll keep working in partnership across the sector to embed real, lasting change.    Read the PSA's full report below ⤵️

📢New publication📢 Today we published 'Lessons from meeting our EDI Standard for regulators – good practice guidance'. Health and care inequalities continue to affect both the public and professionals. These disparities undermine public confidence, compromise fairness, and risk perpetuating structural disadvantages. By publishing this guide, we hope to highlight how regulators are working to embed EDI across their regulatory functions. The report is based on examples of good practice found during our 2023/24 performance reviews, but as Amanda Partington-Todd, our Interim Director of Regulation and Accreditation, said: “Although we have already seen encouraging signs of progress, real change will require long-term commitment and sustained effort.” 🔗 Read the full guide here: https://lnkd.in/eA7Xeyvx

  • We’ve updated our guidance for those making decisions about doctors’ fitness to practise. Dr Andrew Hoyle, Assistant Director in our Fitness to Practise team, has blogged about how the changes will help make decisions more consistent and transparent, and support our commitment to be fair, flexible, and compassionate. • The London skies might have been grey on Saturday, but the energy at the Tomorrow’s Doctors Conference was anything but. We had a fantastic time chatting to medical students and doctors in training about our work and how we support their education and training. We also spoke to students about our annual competition. This year, we’re asking students to create compelling digital content, which explores why sustainability is included as a duty in Good medical practice. Interested in taking part? Head to the comments for more information. A huge thanks to everyone who stopped by to speak to us! #GMC #MedicalStudents #SustainableHealthcare #FutureOfMedicine #MedEd

  • The national training survey results are live! Once again, doctors in training have rated their quality of training and clinical supervision highly. But this year’s data also shows the impact sustained pressures are having on the doctors’ training and wellbeing.   A united effort is needed across the sector to ensure that training remains a priority, and that it’s provided in working environments that are supportive, fair, and free from discrimination.    We’re now reviewing the results for every site, specialty, region and UK country in detail. Where there are concerns, we’ll act, working closely with postgraduate deans and employers to drive improvements.

  • 150 years ago, the Privy Council asked us a big question: Should women be allowed onto the UK medical register? At the time, women couldn’t attend medical school or qualify as doctors in the UK. But some had trained overseas, in countries where women were allowed to practise medicine. The Privy Council’s question led to an extraordinary three-day debate, with GMC Council members divided - some in favour of opening the register, others firmly against. Looking through original documents with our Archivist, Courtney Brucato, our Chair, Professor Dame Carrie MacEwen, reflected that our response seemed to be ‘opening the door’ to change. It’s striking to think this happened just 150 years ago - especially now, when women doctors outnumber their male counterparts in the UK. Take a look back with Courtney and Carrie as they revisit this pivotal moment in medical history.

  • Are you a UK medical student? Fancy being in with the chance of winning a £500 high street voucher? Then why not enter our student professionalism competition! We run the competition every year in partnership with the Medical Schools Council, asking students to create engaging online content that explores an aspect of our work or guidance. This year, it’s all about sustainability, and we’re challenging you to create content that explains why sustainability is included as a duty in Good medical practice and Achieving good medical practice. From a social media post to a blog or even a podcast, it’s up to you how you do this. The key is to be creative! You have until 26 September to take part. Good luck!

  • On last week's Institute of Regulation podcast, our Chief Executive and Registrar, Charlie Massey, and Director of Registration and Revalidation, Una Lane, joined host Marcial Boo for a conversation about what defines regulation, and its role in public life. They explored how regulators can use data and insights to drive change - tackling discrimination, promoting equality, and identifying risks. They also talked about how compassion and humanity should go hand in hand with efficiency in the regulatory world, and urged regulators to act with ambition and purpose. • Howard, Emily, and the team returned from The Aspiring Medic's Support (TAMS) C.I.C medical students conference over the weekend feeling truly inspired. On Saturday, we headed down to The Royal College of Surgeons of England in sunny central London to hear from medical students and doctors who are going above and beyond to make a meaningful, positive impact on society. While we really enjoyed delivering a session on the topic of using social media as a medical professional, the unquestionable highlight of the day has to be the powerful presentations from speakers like Dr Khadija Owusu, whose non-profit organisation supports the next generation of African female leaders, and Aisia Lea about her initiative to improve outcomes for patients from marginalised groups - communities that often experience barriers to healthcare. It was a special day - full of learning, understanding and inspiration - and one we were really proud to be a part of!
