“Everyone’s an expert when it comes to the places where they live, work or spend time,” says PLACED founder Jo Harrop. PLACED supports traditionally underrepresented voices, creating meaningful conversations around the built environment that shape the places where we live and work, while supporting and mentoring young people through education programmes that break down barriers to jobs in the built environment. Since our initial investment, PLACED has increased turnover by more than 40%, developing its offering, amplifying its community-led messaging, creating jobs and making sure local voices are heard. And, this summer, it held its first ‘Better Places Together’ conference, challenging us all to rethink how we approach engagement and social value within the built environment. Melt Arts CIC has a new home in #Birkenhead! 🎵🙅🏿 Black-led nonprofit STO Melt Arts CIC – founded and led by socially-engaged dance artist and choreographer Karl C Newsam – has been changing lives across #Liverpool City Region for more than seven years. It runs open and inclusive educational programmes centred around dance and musical theatre. Melt Arts is a Kindred investee and has also had invaluable support from the BlaST community, helping Karl and his team create and deliver training programmes to nurture local talent of all ages and backgrounds who have a passion for dance. “This is more than a building – this is about building community,” Karl says of Melt’s new Conway Street home. “We’ve created a space where artists of all backgrounds can train, create, and belong. I’m thrilled to finally give Melt Arts a home where we can grow and evolve together.” Melt Arts’ new Birkenhead home isn’t just a creative hub for dancers to learn and express themselves. Melt’s new space also allows them to provide studio hire for rehearsals, classes, holding auditions, developing new work and more. Yesterday Georgia Gould MP Parliamentary Secretary for Public Service Reform at The Cabinet Office invited us Kindred LCR to speak alongside Bev Craig, Tracy Brabin and Selima Bahadur about partnership working between central government, local government, philanthropy, grant making foundations, social investors and impact led business / “Impact Economy”. The Prime Minister and Lisa Nandy MP set out how the Government intends to partner with Civil Society, Social Trade, and Social Investors to unleash the latent entrepreneurialism we have found - in abundance - in communities across Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. I spoke of the phenomenal growth, place transformation, and social innovation taking place as a result of partner working - unlocked when Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region and Power to Change chose to trust communities to build thier own economy; and our plans for Social Investment Pathfinder - LCR to scale that impact x 10 with BlaST Network LCR Fusion21 Livv Housing Group Capacity Heseltine Institute for Public Policy, Practice and Place Power to Change Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Government commitment to communities and devolvolution presents a real opportunity to grow social impact as a movement across the UK.
