We’re proud to be supporting the International Centre for Recurrent Head and Neck Cancer (IReC) – the world’s first centre dedicated to this vital area of research and treatment. Thanks to our supporters, IReC is helping to transform care for patients through pioneering research, surgical innovation and specialist training. Read more about The Royal Marsden's work and IReC’s impact below.
In recognition of #WorldHeadandNeckCancerDay yesterday, we are proud to acknowledge the pioneering work of The Royal Marsden’s International Centre for Recurrent Head and Neck Cancer (IReC) — the world’s first centre dedicated to the research and treatment of recurrent head and neck cancers. IReC was established in 2021, funded by The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, with the ambitious aim of bringing together a team of talented clinicians and researchers to create a centre of international excellence and set international standards in the curative treatment, palliation and supportive care of recurrent cancers. Our current research projects demonstrate our place as a world leader in this field - our researchers participate in several industry trials, and also support seven future academic clinicians who are performing research in the fields of molecular/genetic science, robotic surgery, and functional outcomes for recurrent cancers. Professor Vinidh Paleri, Director of IReC and Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon at The Royal Marsden, said: “I’m incredibly grateful for the generous donations that have made IReC a reality. Our ambitious objectives, from creating a national patient registry and tissue bank, to conducting research into novel treatments and training future specialists, have the potential to utterly transform the treatment and care of patients with recurrent head and neck cancer.” Discover more about the pioneering work of IReC: https://lnkd.in/dDdXyHv

We are incredibly proud to be supporting the International Centre for Recurrent Head and Neck cancer (IReC). The innovative work of the EVEREST-HN programme is ambitious, and we're eager to see the development made by 2028.
Researchers from The Royal Marsden have undertaken an ambitious research programme that aims to revolutionise the head and neck cancer pathway by giving patients quicker access to specialist cancer doctors. In pathways for some suspected cancers, such as prostate and lung, patients may have a scan before being seen in the clinic. But, due to the various types of cancer seen in the head and neck region, there’s no single test or procedure that is suitable to assess everyone referred. The EVEREST-HN programme aims to improve the experience of patients who are referred to NHS services with suspected head and neck cancer. Over the course of the programme (which began in September 2022 and will finalise in September 2028), our researchers will develop and test ways that these patients can tell specialist doctors about their symptoms, before they even come to hospital. EVEREST-HN is supported by the International Centre for Recurrent Head and Neck Cancer (IReC), thanks to funding from The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research). In 2021, Tracy was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. After 5 weeks of radiotherapy, and 19 months of chemotherapy, Tracy underwent an extensive and life-changing surgery at The Royal Marsden. Now, 2 years later, Tracy is very well and is currently cancer free. "I think we, as a family, will fundraise for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity forever. The Royal Marsden saved my husband's life. They saved my life. And I'll be grateful forever that I've got this wonderful life back." 💬 From funding state-of-the-art equipment and groundbreaking research, to creating the very best patient environments, we will never stop looking for ways to improve the lives of people affected by cancer 💜

Just 15 years ago, 1 in 20 patients with advanced melanoma wouldn’t survive for five years. The Checkmate 067 trial, led by The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, has shown 52% of advanced melanoma patients treated with combination immunotherapy treatments survive for at least 10 years. The trial combines immunotherapy drugs Ipilimumab and nivolumab – known to prolong lives but proven to be more effective when working together. “By giving these drugs together... the immune system is able to recognise tumours it wasn't previously recognising, react to that and destroy them.” 💬 Professor James Larkin, Consultant Medical Oncologist, presented the results of the Checkmate 067 trial Lucy, stage 4 melanoma patient, joined this trial after being told she had months to live. Three months into her treatment, her scans showed that she was doing much better. Immunotherapy treatment at The Royal Marsden is supported by The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Your support means that we can help patients have more time with their loved ones. Read more about this ground-breaking trial: https://bit.ly/40uBdZY

Lovely to see HRH The Princess of Wales planting 50 Catherine's Rose plants today, celebrating the incredible healing power of nature. In May this year, the Royal Horticultural Society named Catherine's Rose, bred by Harkness Roses Wholesale, after Her Royal Highness, The Princess of Wales. The beautiful coral-pink rose highlights the important role that spending time outdoors plays in bringing us joy and supporting our mental and physical wellbeing. Funds from the sales of Catherine’s Rose will go towards The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity to help The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust establish a unique training programme for clinical teams across the country in prehabilitation and rehabilitation techniques that will make a huge difference to patient care.
