The Issue
Client called up a well-known supermarket bank to apply for their credit card.
Client was refused because he was 80. The adviser stated that there is a cut off for people that are 80 or over, however they did not provide him with any reason as to why because the adviser he spoke did not have that knowledge. He has also spoken to another Supermarket bank about their credit card and found that they have no cut off for people that are 80 or over. The individual just needs to be 18 or over and have a good credit status.
EASS Advice and Support:
EASS advised that the treatment may amount to direct age discrimination. We also advised that the client should write to the service provider stating their treatment may amount to discrimination and to ask for objective justification and substantial reasons as to why they have the 80 age limit.
Following a call-back as part of our casework process, the client informed us that he had received a very prompt response from the CEO after writing to the chairman of the Supermarket bank. The client stated that he received a letter which apologised for the fact he was unable to access credit and stated that they have now changed their criteria and have made the decision to modify the lending criteria and there is no longer an upper age limit and his application will now be processed as normal.
