This week, Wollongong Art Gallery has opened applications for the reimagined Wollongong Art Prize. Originally established in 1956, the prize has been refreshed to reflect today’s creative landscape. For 2025 it welcomes artists from across Australia, working in any medium, to contribute to a new chapter in the Illawarra’s artistic legacy. Wollongong Art Gallery Director Daniel Mudie Cunningham shared: “Revitalising the prize is about more than just art; it’s about access, inclusivity and community… Whether it’s digital media, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, watercolour, or painting, we’re creating a space where innovation and experimentation are welcomed and celebrated.” With a $32,000 prize pool, the Wollongong Art Prize also offers not just financial support, but a powerful platform to elevate emerging and established artists, celebrate diverse practices, and strengthen Australia’s contemporary art scene. Applications close 14 September for the prize, with finalists exhibited from 6 December 2025 to 1 March 2026 Visit https://lnkd.in/gK5VJZ3c for all the details of the prestigious Wollongong Art Prize

About us
Wollongong is Australia's ninth largest city, with a population of over 200,000. Located 80 kilometres south of Sydney, Wollongong covers 714 square kilometres and occupies a narrow coastal strip bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south, the Tasman Sea to the east and the Illawarra escarpment to the west. Our Strategic Direction and Priorities Council has a range of priorities that it must consider in its planning and allocation of resources. How we manage and address these will be guided by the Community Strategic Plan. Governance We have built an ethical and robust governance framework. Our current focus is on our policies, procedures and practices relating to tendering, contracting and the purchase of goods and services. Customer Service Council’s e-business strategy will increase online access to our services and identify potential efficiency gains for our customers and staff. Value for Money We are committed to the provision of cost effective services that provide the community with good value for money. This requires active financial management now and into the future. We are reviewing our services to understand and improve how we must deliver them. Infrastructure and Service Planning We own and manage a wide variety of assets on behalf of the community. Assets like roads, parks, stormwater, drainage, libraries and community facilities underpin the success of the city as a place for people to live, work and play. Climate Change The potential impacts of climate change and sea level rise require us to plan for and manage our existing coastal communities, consider the impacts of flooding on new development, and propose mitigation and adaption measures for anticipated risk. Wollongong City Council’s social media channels aims to inform, educate, and inspire our community. For more information visit https://www.wollongong.nsw.gov.au/digital-guidelines

Wollongong is set to shine on the national stage once again! We're proud to announce that Wollongong has been selected as one of three Australian hosts for the upcoming netball series between the world number one Australian Diamonds and South Africa’s SPAR Proteas. The match will take place at the WIN Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, 8 October 2025. This is more than just a game, it’s a celebration of community, excellence, and opportunity. Netball is Wollongong’s third most popular sport, with over 4,000 players hitting the courts at Fred Finch Park each weekend. This event is a testament to the strength and passion of our local netball community and the investments made by Council to elevate sporting infrastructure. Hosting national-level games will inspire the next generation, showing our young players that elite sport is within reach, and right here in their backyard. Major sporting events like this bring visitors, stimulate local businesses, and showcase Wollongong as a vibrant host city. It’s a win for tourism, hospitality, and community pride. Let’s rally together to support our athletes and celebrate Wollongong’s growing reputation as a hub for world-class sport. Image: Netball Australia
