Fly-tipping, stalling recycling rates and wasted resources aren’t just local problems, they’re national challenges. On Friday in Southall, we met with MP Deirdre Costigan, former chair of the Tidy Britain APPG, to show her an electric road sweeper in action and talk about real solutions. She shared her support for stronger action on waste crime, ranging from low-level littering to large-scale fly-tipping, better recycling systems, and policies that help reduce waste across the UK. Protecting the environment takes teamwork from councils to government to industry – we need joined-up action to keep resources in the circular economy, where they belong. It was a great opportunity to connect on what’s working and what needs to change.

Yesterday was Earth Overshoot Day, a reminder that the planet is using more than it can sustainably provide and that we need to speed up efforts to reduce waste. That’s why Biffa welcomes the UK ETS Authority’s interim response on extending the Emissions Trading Scheme to cover waste thermal treatment – it's a vital step toward the decarbonisation of waste processing. At Biffa, we’ve long advocated for the use of emissions factors to fairly allocate carbon costs to waste producers. If done right, this could help drive real change by diverting plastics from general waste into reuse and recycling, where they belong. There’re still important details to be worked through. We want to see proposals that ensure the inclusion of chemical recycling under ETS doesn’t deter much-needed investment in next-generation recycling infrastructure. We’ll be looking closely at how the scheme evolves so we can build a truly circular future. #EarthOvershootDay #Waste #CircularEconomy

Nearly a fifth of all waste in the UK ends up in the hands of criminals and many businesses don’t even realise their waste operator is managing their waste illegally. The government is urging councils to crack down on illegal waste operators but businesses have a vital role to play too. Before handing over your waste, check: ✅ Are they authorised to carry waste? ✅ Do they provide a waste transfer note? ✅ Where is the waste really going? ✅ Do they handle hazardous items with proper paperwork? Swipe to check if your waste provider is compliant.

This week, our CEO Michael Topham joined a Government Roundtable on the Packaging Circular Economy, co-chaired by Secretaries of State Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP and Jonathan Reynolds MP, with Minister for Circular Economy Mary Creagh MP leading a forward-looking and engaged discussion alongside Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Director Emma Bourne. With the legislative framework now in place, the focus was on turning ambition into action. Key topics included: 🔁 Investing in better recycling and reuse infrastructure 🏭 Encouraging producers to lead change across the supply chain 💡 Driving innovation in packaging materials and design It was great to see shared commitment to collaboration. Thanks to DEFRA, PackUK and all involved for a powerful and productive session. We're proud to represent the UK’s resource and waste sector at such a pivotal moment. Let’s keep moving forward together.

Legislation is evolving but what’s the real impact for businesses and local authorities? At our Waste Net Zero event held earlier last month, we brought leaders from across the value chain together to explore just that. With new policies reshaping everything from feedstock quality to business revenues, one of our breakout sessions took a deep dive into what these changes mean for Local Authorities, businesses, and beyond. Watch the video below to hear from Carla Brian, Biffa's Head of Partnerships, and Rosie Bartram, Head of Public Affairs at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP), as they share key takeaways and highlights from the session 👇
