  • 🏗️ Ask the Apprentice! Ever wondered what it’s really like to be an apprentice? We caught up with Jordan Ogunyemi, a Morrisroe formwork apprentice, about his experience so far. How are you finding your apprenticeship? 💬 “I love it! It's challenging but interesting - I learn something new every day and practice as much as possible.” What’s been the most challenging part, and how have you overcome it? 💬 “Not having a hoist at work. It's a lot of walking every day, and I get a minimum of 35,000 steps each day." What advice would you give someone thinking about a career in construction? 💬 “It takes a lot of determination and focus to pick up skills. Make sure to ask questions.” If you’re interested in applying for an apprenticeship or learning more about the options available, visit: https://lnkd.in/gd3kvXZ Have your own questions for our apprentices? We're incredibly proud to announce a significant milestone for our Construction Skills Programme: we've now trained 10,000 learners since 2019! 🎉 In partnership with The Skills Centre, this programme is actively shaping London's workforce, helping 4,200 people transition into new careers across the built environment sector. Our network of five academies, including the innovative Green Plant Academy, offers a wide range of qualifications from apprenticeships and NVQs to specialist green plant operating skills. A key focus of our programme is increasing diversity within the construction industry. We're proud that 65% of our trainees come from backgrounds currently underrepresented in the sector, including women and individuals from Black, Asian, and other ethnic minority communities. By providing opportunities to those from underrepresented backgrounds, we're fostering a more inclusive workforce that also better reflects London's diversity and makes it such a special city to live, work and visit. Thank you to all our learners, partners, and collaborators for making this possible. We're excited to continue empowering Londoners and contributing to the capital's growth, together 🏗️🏡

    Regional Workforce Manager

We have recently conducted quarterly reviews with our steel fixing apprentices from CEMC, who are currently studying Level 2 standard steel fixing qualification at The Skills Centre in London. The reviews are a transparent and adjoined interaction between our apprentices, the Skills Centre and Senior Production Leader Daniel Fricker and the workforce function. The review process was a chance for all parties to discuss progress, performance and objectives moving forward into the new term. We are very pleased to report that the reviews were exceptional, very positive and very personable. We would like to thank Daniel Fricker and his team, the structure Daniel and his team have implemented from onboarding through to production is one of the reason the apprentices gave such positivity reviews of their experiences at CEMC. “loving coming to work “ “being part of the best team ever” “thanks for giving me an opportunity I didn’t think I deserved”. Daniel led the process with a blended approach to his selection ensuring that some of his existing workforce were given a new opportunity to develop their skills and learn a new trade, which would allow them to grow within the business, as well as securing two new apprentices from within the local community. Daniel’s team have offered full support and mentorship to the apprentices aiding them on their learning journey.   The feedback from the Skills Centre on our apprentices was very positive and we would like to thank the apprentices for their professionalism and their enthusiasm. We would also like to thank Terence Crowe for his expertise and commitment to our apprentices. Keep up the fantastic work Alfie Kay, Luke Parker, Ethan Warner, Warren Weeks and Mateusz Zajder. Educational Engagement Spotlight: Inspiring the Next Generation 👷💡 🙌 This month, we delivered our Building Future Skills programme at Palestra House in partnership with Places for London (Transport for London’s property company), as part of their Educational Engagement Programme. Over three days, 31 young people took part in activities designed to develop their employability skills and introduce them to careers in the built environment sector. 🔹 Day 1 included a site tour of 10 King William Street — an over-station development at Bank (a joint venture between Helical plc and Places for London) — followed by a networking session with professionals from roles such as Associate Director, Construction Skills Manager, and Head of Sustainability. 🔹 Day 2 featured an Apprentice Q&A, giving participants a chance to hear directly from current apprentices. They then worked in teams on a project brief to create a tender for an over-station development, taking on roles like Architect, Structural Engineer, Quantity Surveyor, and Project Manager. 🔹 Day 3 concluded with mock interviews and final project presentations to a panel of judges from Grainger PLC, The Skills Centre, and Transport for London. A huge thank you to Places for London and their joint development partners – Barratt London, The Earls Court Development Company, Fastned, Grainger PLC, and Helical plc – for their collaboration and continued support, which are vital to the success of our Educational Engagement Programme. With special thanks also to McLaren Construction Group and The Skills Centre for generously volunteering your time and expertise. Your support was instrumental in inspiring young people to pursue careers in the built environment sector! #BuildingFutureSkills #EducationalEngagementProgramme #CareersInConstruction

We’re excited to share that this week the latest cohort of trainees at The Skills Centre Centre in Canada Water began their SFS training for the first time. With details, drawings, and calculations provided by Seán O' Connor, and materials including Stanta SFS and DensGlass Board, the trainees were able to get hands-on experience from the outset. It was a pleasure meeting the group and having the chance to talk about the work we do at Stanta UK. I also supported Carl with the morning briefing, emphasising the importance of health and safety, starting with properly reading risk assessments and method statements before beginning any task. The session soon turned into an engaging Q&A, with some excellent questions and an opportunity to share wider site experience with trainees keen to start their careers in construction. This collaboration follows our participation in a mock interview day at The Skills Centre back in April, organised by Dovile Catterick. As a result, we hired one of the trainees, who has since made great progress with our team at Aylesbury Estate. We highly recommend reaching out to Matt Strutt at The Skills Centre for details on upcoming interview days and other opportunities to support their fantastic work in preparing skilled labour for the industry.
