💷 Steel opportunities identified in UK in Heathrow expansion plan and abroad as EU category 17 quota opens up 1. Heathrow expansion: increased demand for UK steel The £21 billion investment in Heathrow Airport's expansion plans, officially published today, presents a substantial opportunity for UK steel producers. Past expansion projects, such as Terminal 5 (which utilized approximately 80,000 tonnes of steel), demonstrate the scale of material required for such undertakings. Today's newly-published plan shows significant expansion and rebuilding is expected surrounding the new third runway. This investment is expected to generate major demand for UK-made steel, creating businesses and employment opportunities across the steel supply chain. 2. EU Quotas secured: maintaining market access The UK Government's securing of country-specific quotas for Category 17 steel exports to the EU is another positive development. This decision ensures tariff-free access for UK steelmakers, allowing for the export of up to 27,000 tonnes of structural steel per quarter. This reinstalls access to a key export market and supports the continued competitiveness of the UK steel industry. 📑 In other trade news, earlier this week President Trump said that cuts to the US steel tariffs for UK steel imports are coming "pretty soon". The combination of increased domestic demand from the Heathrow expansion and the secured EU export quotas positions the UK steel sector for growth. Delivering zero US tariffs urgently will provide significant business and job security for our industry. #uksteel #heathrowexpansion #euexports #steelindustry Department for Business and Trade

Commenting on today's announcement by Heathrow of its proposals for a third runway, our chief executive Karen Dee, said: “Airports are national, regional and local hubs of economic activity, creating jobs, bringing in investment, helping businesses reach out to new markets and connecting family and friends. “Expanding their capacity will mean they can put on more routes to destinations people want to go to and provide local areas with the opportunity to increase their economic prosperity. “This can be achieved within our sustainability and noise impact targets, with new, cleaner, quieter aircraft, fuels and ground operations, airspace modernisation, and investment in local communities all playing a role. “We urge government to continue to support the aviation sector’s ability to drive economic growth and our members will continue to work with ministers and officials to realise this aim.” “The government’s backing for expanding Heathrow will send a clear signal: backing airports means backing Britain’s growth – unlocking jobs, trade, and global connectivity for generations to come.”

CEO at Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce

Today I attended an important event marking Heathrow’s submission of its expansion proposal to the Government — a major step in what could be a transformational project for the UK economy. Heathrow’s leadership outlined a vision for sustainable and responsible growth – powered by private investment – that supports local jobs, strengthens regional supply chains, and delivers tangible outcomes for communities across the UK. As part of the Hillingdon business community, it’s encouraging to see strong commitments to collaboration, environmental stewardship, and long-term local engagement. This project represents not just a boost for aviation, but for the entire ecosystem of innovation, employment and inward investment surrounding Heathrow. It is also a great example of how growth and development can go hand-in-hand with transparency and meaningful dialogue and that the voices of local community is shaping what comes next.
