The first choice of milk for our most vulnerable premature babies is their mother’s own milk, but for some families, whose babies arrive early, this isn’t always an option. This World Breastfeeding Week, the focus is on the ongoing support women and babies need from the healthcare system throughout their breastfeeding journey – from pregnancy through to early childhood. Discover how our milk bank at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital supports our premature and sick babies with feeding ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eEz9HtwS #WBW2025 #WorldBreastfeedingWeek

Clinical trials of the new implant in over 100 of our patients at Charing Cross Hospital found that patients could return to physical activities such as swimming and cycling within six weeks of their operation – like with all modern hip replacements. 👏
A new implant which enables women to have a type of hip surgery previously only suitable for men has been awarded a CE mark. Developed by researchers at Imperial College London spinout Embody Orthopaedic it is transforming outcomes for younger and more active women. Hip resurfacing is surgery to repair damage inside the hip joint. It is typically carried out on younger patients rather than total hip replacement and involves the surgeon removing the diseased cartilage of the hip joint and resurfacing the joint. However, until now, women have been unable to have hip resurfacing surgery. This is because it used metal implants that were not optimised for women’s hip shapes. The new H1 implant is ceramic which is more wear-resistant material and can also be shaped to fit the natural contours of the joint. Clinical trials of the new implant in over 100 patients at Charing Cross Hospital, part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, found that patients could return to physical activities such as swimming and cycling within six weeks – like all modern hip replacements - of their operation. Professor Justin Cobb, Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London, Head of Elective Surgery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Co-Founder of Embody Orthopaedic, said: "Alongside improving the picture for women, the new implant also reduces the risk of side effects.” Read more on this exciting new innovation and the patients who have benefited so far below: 👇🏾 https://lnkd.in/eanxjpkr

A great example of collaboration featuring some of our staff from the Western Eye Hospital - where specialist consultants and nurses offer exceptional care for every aspect of the eye. 👁️
History made at CIME! AKU’s first-ever DMEK corneal transplant training on human tissues just wrapped up — and it was nothing short of eye-opening. 👁️ The training was led by the Department of Ophthalmology, AKU, in collaboration with Dr Nizar Din and Dr Omer Jamall from Western Eye Hospital (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust). This incredible hands-on experience brought together budding eye surgeons from AKU and Layton Rahmatulla Benevolent Trust - LRBT to master the art of ultra-precise corneal transplants — using human tissues flown in all the way from the USA. Big thanks to everyone involved in making this happen. From the sim lab to the surgical suite — this is how we truly train for impact at CIME. #AKUCIME #DMEK #CornealTransplant #SurgicalSimulation

Vaishali Kale MSc, RN., clinical nurse specialist in lipids and apheresis, has won a prestigious Churchill Fellowship to travel to Japan, South Korea, India and Singapore to learn about how they are integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics in nursing. 👏 In our latest blog Vaishali shares her motivations for applying for the fellowship and how she will use her findings to bring about innovation across our Trust ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dSWmhQb2 "The UK government's 10-year plan for the NHS emphasises the use of technology to improve healthcare delivery and address key challenges. The plan's focus on digital transformation and innovation aligns directly with the potential of AI and robotics. "AI and robots can automate tasks like medication dispensing, allowing nurses to concentrate on patient care and improving overall service quality. I want to use the findings of my project to boost efficiency, improve patient outcomes and foster innovation in the UK healthcare system." #ArtificalIntelligence #AI #Robotics #DigitalTransformation #TenYearPlan

The Peart Rose cardiovascular research team at Hammersmith Hospital has just recruited the first patient in Europe to a clinical trial of a new medical device (Shockwave Reducer) designed to help improve blood flow to the heart in people with persistent chest pain. Dr Rasha Al-Lamee, cardiology consultant at our Trust and co-lead of the cardiovascular theme of the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre, is the chief investigator for the study. Researchers hope the trials could lead to more treatment options for patients whose chest pain has not improved with the use of current available medications. For more information, email the team on imperial.ichc-tr.prrt@nhs.net. #Research #ChestPain #Cardiology #MedicalDevice

Earlier this year, Mark Izatt was diagnosed with throat cancer after originally coming to our hospitals through our accident and emergency department. After four chemotherapy sessions and 30 radiotherapy sessions, he has now rung the bell to signal the end of his treatment and the start of his recovery. 💙 Mark shared with us, “The team at Charing Cross Hospital have been nothing short of incredible. I have felt looked after by friendly and thoughtful clinicians throughout my journey and empowered to understand every step of my care plan and treatment. “I was often asked the same thing when meeting a new doctor or consultant: ‘Why do you think you are here?’. This helped me to feel in control of my story and what was happening to me at a time when I was facing a lot of uncertainty. “Digital tools such as the NHS app and the care information exchange portal have also helped me to stay in the know which I have really appreciated. It has been refreshing to undergo care in an environment that truly understands the value of teamwork and technology. “I also really appreciated that the plan that was outlined to me at the very beginning of my journey, was the plan that actually unfolded – every step and date remained the same. This meant I could focus on getting through the treatment and ringing that bell exactly on schedule!” Digital innovation and technology are at the heart of the government's 10 Year Health Plan to make an NHS that is fit for the future.
