  • Ben Brookes, National Commercial Partnerships Manager is proud to be working with partners the British Transplant Games this weekend. 'The great thing about working in the Partnerships team is the amazing variety of partners we get to work with. In my two years at NHSBT I have been fortunate to work with some incredible partners such as Fulham FC, Basketball England, London Dungeon and Barclays, but this is my first time working on the British Transplant Games. "I've heard brilliant things from everyone that has been before, either as an NHSBT representative or a competitor and can't wait to see the participants celebrating life by participating in sport.' Follow our social media channels to see all the work that Ben and the team are doing. #Proud2B #ItTakesAllTypes

  • 🎉 500,000 litres of plasma and counting!! We’re proud to have reached another incredible milestone in the NHS plasma journey - dispatching 500,000 litres of this ‘liquid gold’, to make lifesaving medicines. To put this in perspective, that's enough plasma to fill 1,667 bathtubs! 🛁 This operational achievement reflects the dedication of our blood and plasma donors (plasma can be retrieved from a blood donation) and staff across collection, processing and logistics. Donations are transformed through a process called fractionation, where plasma is separated into different proteins to create treatments for people with rare diseases, immune disorders and critical conditions. Octapharma is the appointed fractionator, carrying out the fractionation and medicine production at its European facilities. Since March, patients across the country have started to receive albumin and immunoglobulin medicine made from UK donors, directly saving lives and improving patient care. 💉 Congratulations to all colleagues involved, and heartfelt thanks to every donor who makes this work possible. • Meena, Contacts and Commissioning Manager, and Harpreet, Regional Head of Nursing, are both of South Asian Heritage. In this video, they discuss organ donation in the South Asian community. ✳️ Around 1400 Asian patients are waiting for an organ transplant. ✳️ On average Asian patients wait 4 months longer for a kidney transplant. ✳️ 686 Asian patients received a lifesaving transplant last year. ✳️ Last year, 124 organ donors were of Asian heritage. Whatever your route to organ donation, confirming your decision to be an organ donor is the best thing you'll do today. #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #SAHM #RoutesToRoots #OrganDonation

  • 🩸 What an incredible day at food supplier Brakes UK! We're thrilled to share the success of our recent 'What's Your Blood Type?' event, the most successful recruitment day for our local Reading team to date. This fantastic opportunity came about thanks to Jules Hatt, one of our dedicated plasma donors and National Account Manager at Brakes Sysco, who kindly invited us to her workplace. The response was brilliant – we recruited 44 enthusiastic new blood and plasma donors at the warehouse of Brakes in just a few hours! “When I realised all the incredible things plasma can do, I just thought I’ve got to get behind this,” says Juliette. "I think the event really brought us together as a company. Engagement from all the staff at the depot was just phenomenal and there was a real buzz at the time.” At ‘What’s Your Blood Type?’ events, our staff carry out quick and simple finger prick tests to help individuals discover their blood type. 🩸 Shilpa Sehdev, Community Engagement Coordinator at NHS Blood and Transplant, says: “The commitment from the team at Brakes was overwhelming. “What stood out most was the incredible diversity of their staff, all coming together for a shared cause - it was genuinely heart-warming to witness.” 🤝 Would your workplace be interested in hosting an event like this? It can be fantastic way to engage your team in lifesaving work whilst learning more about blood and plasma donation. Get in touch to express your interest at ceplasma@nhsbt.nhs.uk.    #CommunityEngagement #WorkplaceWellbeing #SaveLives #NHS

  • 🎥 Powerful to see Mike Hammond, Chief Executive of University Hospitals Birmingham Charity, rolling up his sleeves to donate plasma – and sharing why he enjoyed the experience. Working at an organisation that sees how plasma medicine can change lives, Mike knows just how crucial these donations are. From mothers and babies in neonatal units receiving albumin during critical procedures, to patients receiving immunoglobulin to fight infections their bodies can't handle alone, plasma medicine saves lives every day. We appreciate your support and all you’re doing to raise awareness of donation, Mike! #GivePlasma #GivingType #SaveLives #NHS #Birmingham #Healthcare

  • 🚨 Tens of thousands of blood donors in the UK have had their blood types DNA tested for the first time, in a groundbreaking UK first. This is a major step towards precision-matched blood, reducing transfusion reactions. Precision matching blood can avoid severe transfusion reactions, which are a particular risk in those who regularly receive blood, such as those with sickle cell disorder and transfusion dependent thalassaemia. 🩸 We have genotyped 77,000 donors, confirming rare blood types and paving the way for safer transfusions. This genotyping is a first major step towards rolling out precision matched blood more widely, which would be a landmark change in how blood is matched. Dr. Gail Miflin, Chief Medical Officer at NHS Blood and Transplant said, "This incredible undertaking will change how we issue blood, especially for high-risk patients." Full story in the comments. ⬇️ #BloodDonation #NHS #PrecisionMedicine #STRIDES

  • 🩸 Brilliant to see Alistair Carns, MP for Birmingham Selly Oak, leading by example with his first-ever plasma donation! Al rolled up his sleeves during a visit to Birmingham Plasma Donor Centre on Friday, where he also met staff running the smooth operation. Plasma is often called 'liquid gold' for good reason – it's used to create lifesaving immunoglobulin and albumin medicines, to treat rare diseases, immune deficiencies, and critical conditions. Al says: "It was fantastic to visit the donor centre, meet the staff, and learn more about their vital work and the importance of plasma donation. "Knowing the generosity of the people from Birmingham, I encourage anyone who is able to make a donation to do so. "You can easily book an appointment online and donate – it is quick and straightforward. I am pleased to have donated plasma and look forward to donating again soon." It was fantastic to hear about Al’s plans to raise awareness of plasma donation and to donate again soon. Increasing the number of people donating at our 3 plasma donor centres – in Birmingham, Reading and Twickenham – is a key mission of NHS Blood and Transplant this year. By the end of 2025, we hope up to 23% of the country’s immunoglobulin needs and 80% of albumin requirements will be met through our plasma collection. #GivePlasma #GivingType #SaveLives #NHS #Birmingham #CommunitySpirit

  • July is Disability Pride Month, so we want to bring you the story of Tara, who works in our Talent Acquisition and Recruitment team. "Before joining NHS Blood & Transplant (NHSBT) In October 2023, I had a long-standing career in specialist recruitment and then unfortunately obtained an injury to my spine that has left me with a life-long physical disability. Returning to work for an employer was a key milestone for me in both accepting my disability and finding the confidence to return to a workplace. "When applying for my role here, I couldn’t have had a better experience. I was fully supported to access my interview and throughout the onboarding process. I felt I was treated equally and empowered to be viewed on my merit and ability and given a supportive arena to be able to perform my best at interview. "Since joining, I have been supported with the adjustments I need to access my role and fulfil my potential here. I am now on my second contract within the same team and feel privileged to work within Talent Acquisition & Recruitment where I can now have a direct impact on the experience people with disabilities have when they are looking to join us. Our whole team are so passionate about inclusivity, and I am proud to be part of the team that enables people just like me have a positive experience and achieve their potential. "I would encourage anyone that feels the same way I did to take a look at career opportunities with us and have the confidence to submit that application- you really won’t regret it! It takes all types of people to make our live saving organisation succeed and you really will be supported here." Colleagues like Tara are what makes NHSBT such a great place to work.
