Last week we were delighted to welcome Minister of State for Science, Research and Innovation, Lord Vallance to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH), and share the progress being made as part of the world-first clinical trial using the #Versius robotic system in paediatric surgery, which our surgeons have described as ‘game-changing’ for the care of children. Lord Vallance met with MFT colleagues including; Darren Banks - Interim Deputy Trust Chief Executive, Dr Toli Onon - Joint Chief Medical Officer, Ursula Martin – Chief Executive for the Specialist Hospitals Clinical Group, and Mr David Keene - Consultant Paediatric Urology Surgeon, who is leading the study into the use of the system at RMCH. As part of the visit, Mr Keene provided Lord Vallance with a demonstration of the system before Lord Vallance took over the controls. Mr Keene also discussed the major benefits of the system,  including greatly reduced in-hospital recovery times for patients, and less physical demand on surgeons allowing a greater number of surgeries to be carried out each day, whilst  Dr Onon, provided an overview of our Trust plans for robotic surgery and being able to deliver increasingly more complex surgeries across our hospitals. In late 2024, four-month-old Mohammed became the youngest person in the world to successfully have surgery using the Versius Surgical System, You can read more about Mohammed’s story, along with 10 year old Harry’s story in this web article https://lnkd.in/enP7NmYb Thank you to colleagues from Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and CMR Surgical for supporting the visit to highlight the cutting-edge research and innovation delivered at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, driving positive change in health and care for everyone, everyday.
