We are the UK's national museum of arms and armour
About us
The Royal Armouries is the United Kingdom’s national museum of arms and armour, and one of the most important museums of its type in the world. We have a long history, dating back to the Middle Ages. Our celebrated core collection originated in the nation’s working arsenal, which was assembled over many centuries at the Tower of London. The Royal Armouries are heir to one of the oldest deliberately created visitor attractions in the country. Objects were being arranged for display to visitors as early as Queen Elizabeth’s reign in the 16th century. Our collection of about 75,000 items – excluding approximately 2,700 loans to other bodies – is now displayed and housed in our historical home at the White Tower in the Tower of London but also at our purpose-built museum in Leeds, and at Fort Nelson near Portsmouth.

We were honoured to host some very special guests as we installed the symbolic sabre of Hetman Ivan Mezapa in the White Tower today. This is the first time the sabre has been on display in the UK and is thanks to the work of Ukraine WOW and the Chernihiv Historical Museum. The exhibition was opened by Sir Stephen Fry and with the music of the inspirational soldiers and musicians from the Cultural Forces of Ukraine. Congratulations to the whole team, including the founders of Ukraine WOW Yaroslava Gres and Yulia Solovey, and the security partner and supporters of the project Ajax Systems. The exhibition is on until 3 August at The Tower of London, and thanks to our colleagues at Historic Royal Palaces for their support. Image credit Ukraine WOW.

The Gladiators have arrived! We celebrated the opening of our new exhibition - 'Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum' with our friends and supporters this week. We were honoured to welcome Jodie Ounsley, also known as Fury from BBC One's Gladiators, who shared her inspirational journey as a sports personality. The exhibition opens on Saturday, 28 June to 2 November, and features rare Roman artefacts from Pompeii and Rome, on display in the UK for the first time. This immersive exhibition separates fact from fiction and explores what life was really like for the fiercest fighters of the ancient world. Thanks to our exhibition partners Contemporanea Progetti , Expona Exhibitions, and Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. The creation of the Special Exhibitions Gallery has been supported by Garfield Weston Foundation and The Wolfson Foundation.

An excellent video by Bruynzeel Storage Systems showcasing the bespoke storage solution they have developed for our firearms collection. It was a pleasure collaborating on such an innovative and tailored design—great to see it come to life!
Take a look inside one of the UK’s most important collections of historic arms and armour. From ancient to modern firearms, the Royal Armouries Museum preserves a powerful legacy. In this video, Senior Curator Mark Murray-flutter and Richard Tong Project Sales Manager at Bruynzeel Storage Systems take us into the archive, where 2,500–3,000 rifles and countless accessories are stored with precision and care. To protect this diverse collection, Bruynzeel provided a storage solution designed to ensure accessibility, safety, and long-term preservation. #Weaponstorage #CulturalHeritage #Preservation
