About us
The Trust serves a population of 5.6 million people covering an area of more than 5,000 square miles made up of Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Coventry, Birmingham and Black Country conurbation. As the region’s emergency ambulance service, we respond to around 4,000 ‘999’ calls each day. To manage that level of demand, we employ approximately 7,000 staff and operate from 15 new fleet preparation hubs across the region. We also provide non-emergency patient transport services across some parts of the region for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need. Our staff complete approximately 1,000,000 non-emergency patient journeys each year.

How do you run a 999 control room when core systems fail? Earlier this week, our Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) team deliberately put that question to the test. In a full-scale cyber-outage simulation exercise, over 40 members of staff including call takers and dispatchers to managers stepped up to simulate a complete failure of our 999 Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), digital telephony and radio systems. The team activated the EOC business continuity plan, switching to manual procedures and backup tools and working seamlessly as a team to maintain critical emergency services across the region just as they would in a real-world incident. This exercise forms a vital part of the Trust's resilience strategy. It ensures we’re not only ready for digital disruption, but that we can continue delivering safe, effective care no matter the challenge. A huge thank you to everyone involved for making this simulation such a success.

The Trust recently said farewell to two outstanding individuals who’ve dedicated decades to serving patients across Cheshire as voluntary car drivers. 👏 Bob Ward retired after an incredible 38 years, bringing the same energy and character he showed during his time aboard the MV Royal Iris and later as a local DJ and Rod Stewart tribute performer! 👏 Phil Plumb served for 20 years, having first built a career with GPO Telecoms and BT before turning his attention to helping others through our Patient Transport Service. On 8ᵗʰ July 2025, colleagues gathered at PTS Warrington to celebrate Bob and Phil’s service with an informal buffet and heartfelt tributes. Steven Hockenhull, PTS Cheshire Senior Operations Manager, said: "I’d like to express my heartfelt thanks for the many years of service both Bob and Phil have given to the community and wish them Wishing them both a happy and fulfilling retirement!

This past week, members of the ONE Network met with the Chief for a working lunch to reflect on the past 12 months and look ahead to the future. Mohammed Ramzan, mohammed azim, Kiron Bhamra and Mumtaz Goolam were among those who joined the valuable opportunity to acknowledge the progress that's been made in building a more inclusive and supportive workplace, and to discuss how to continue to grow that impact across the organisation. The Chief expressed his sincere thanks to everyone involved in the network, recognising the dedication and passion of its members. It’s this ongoing commitment that makes the ONE Network such a driving force for positive change. There’s still more to do and we’re focused on delivering more face-to-face events, increasing staff awareness, engaging with our communities, and supporting colleagues every day. #Inclusion #DiversityAtWork #TeamWMAS #OneNetwork #LeadershipInAction

💙 Our Health and Wellbeing Roadshows are going strong! Last week, we brought the roadshow to the Gravelly PTS Hub in BIrmingham, where staff took full advantage of the opportunity to prioritise their health and wellbeing. From free health checks to meaningful conversations with support groups both inside and outside the Trust — the event was buzzing with positive energy. A big thank you to organisations like Barclays UK NHS Blood Donation and Thrive into Work from Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trustbeing part of the day. Colleagues also enjoyed taking on rowing challenges and browsing handmade crafts created by our talented team member, Kate! 👩⚕️🪡 Manjeet Malhi, our Health and Wellbeing Manager, said: “What a wonderful experience with so many staff actively engaging and prioritising their health. It also sparked many valuable conversations around wellbeing and support available to them.” Here’s to building a healthier, more supported workplace for all! 💪

Throughout June, we’ve proudly shared the voices of our LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies across West Midlands Ambulance Service as part of our #ProudToBeHere campaign. Each story highlighted the power of being seen, supported, and valued - not only during Pride Month, but every single day. From frontline teams to behind-the-scenes roles, our staff and volunteers have shown what it means to be part of an organisation that champions fairness, respect and inclusion for all. 🙌 A heartfelt thank you to everyone who shared their story. Your openness and pride help create a workplace where everyone can thrive. We’ll continue to stand with our LGBTQ+ colleagues and communities, this month and beyond. 🏳️🌈 #PrideMonth #Inclusion #EqualityMatters #TeamWMAS #LGBTQatWork #PeopleFirst
