City of Parramatta is inviting local school students to participate in “The ‘James Martin’ in My World: A Treasury of True Stories of Struggle and Triumph,” a writing competition inspired by James Martin, a poor Parramatta boy who faced adversity and triumphed, rising to become Premier of NSW. Open to Year 7 and 8 students attending schools in the Parramatta LGA, the competition encourages students to write a true story (500 words or less) about someone in their world who started with no advantages and made a success of their life. Thirty selected stories will be published in a commemorative book launched at a special event on 14 August 2025 at Parramatta Square. A supporting document with story examples and background on James Martin is available at the link below to assist teachers and students. Entries to be submitted by schools on behalf of students by 5pm Monday 4 August 2025. Learn more about the competition, judging panel and how to submit by visiting https://lnkd.in/gRDEm7ae 👈 This competition is presented in partnership between the City of Parramatta and the Lysicrates Foundation, with the support of the NSW Department of Education, and with the involvement of Catholic Schools NSW and the Association of Independent Schools of NSW, facilitated by the NSW Education Standards Authority.

Riverside Theatres redevelopment moves ahead City of Parramatta is pushing ahead plans to reimagine Riverside Theatres with the detailed design and tender process to deliver Parramatta’s iconic centrepiece given the green light at tonight’s Council Meeting. The $276.8 million redevelopment will deliver expanded performance spaces, cutting-edge technology and improved accessibility, creating a world-class cultural destination in Western Sydney. Plans to transform PHIVE’s Discovery Space into an innovative new temporary theatre – ‘Riverside Live at PHIVE’ – were also endorsed to ensure the community will continue to experience quality shows and productions during the construction period. The Riverside redevelopment project is funded by City of Parramatta and the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program. Council has called on the Australian Government to share the funding burden and re-balance investment in Western Sydney’s cultural infrastructure.
